Plus 1 prop from me.

I wish I still had that receipt but I am hiding them so well from my wife that I can't find them either

Re: Great Hobbies discount

Great response and typical to my experience with Great Hobbies in the past. I have always found if I take a problem to a supplier, rather than a public forum, it can usually be resolved.

Any body ever had a disagreement with Rogers, Bell or a credit card company? Just keep asking to speak to a person who is in a position to make a decision in your favour if and when you have a question. If they are not in a position to make a decision in your favour, you just have to keep climbing the ladder.

This is good for a prop for GH.

Re: Great Hobbies discount

Hello to the gang on RC Canada. I see there are a couple of points that have been brought up that I would like to address. I will take these on individually.

MAAC Member Shipping Discount
You are correct. The MAAC Member Shipping Discount currently does not automatically get applied on each qualifying order. This is not because we want to discontinue the program. It is simply a result of the current software not being able to handle it automatically for the time being.

As most of you know, Great Hobbies has gone through some major changes in the past few months. One of the changes is the software that runs our business. After 25 years of running the same DOS based software (state of the art at the time of development, but now completely archaic), we are finally integrating new custom software into the day-to-day operations of our company. This software is in its infancy and will be under continual development. It is currently able to do what we need to get orders processed and it can already do many things much better than the old software. However, there are a few features in the old system that have not yet been implemented, and the MAAC program is one of them.

For the time being, you can ask for the MAAC Shipping Discount when you order (whether by phone or on-line) and provide your MAAC membership number each time. We apologize that this may not be quite as convenient as before, however it is what we have to work with at the moment. Please note the following caveat! Since this is now a manual process, there are procedures that have to be done by several people along the way to make it happen correctly, including order taking staff and order processing staff. Please understand, when a manual operation is injected into a normally smooth, automated process, things can go astray. If you look at your invoice after receiving your order and it appears the discount has not been applied to a particular order where it had been requested, please let us know so we can credit a future order.

We are working on developing programs for the future and will be integrating them into the software system as time permits. We will be advertising these programs as they become available. For the time being, please be assured that we want to look after you as best we can in this area using the resources at hand.

Price Matching Policy
I agree wholeheartedly with both Florin and JKovats in their most recent posts. We should have matched the price on that rocket, regardless that it was below our cost (and it was very much below our cost). This is something I will be addressing today with the managers of all locations.

I would like to take this opportunity to go over our Best Price Guarantee.

Here it is as currently posted on our website:
Great Hobbies has always had a price matching guarantee and now we are going one step further. If a qualifying product nationally advertised at a lower price by any Canadian Hobby Shop, we will not only match it, but beat it by 25% of the difference*! Just show us the Canadian URL where the product is priced lower and we'll beat it. It's that simple!

Our best price guarantee will apply to in-stock items that a competitor is able and willing to sell for the price advertised. The price guarantee does not apply to competitors advertising that are known to be “clearance”, “close-outs”, “bankruptcies”, or non-stocked items. If we deemed an item did not qualify, you are still guaranteed to get the best price. If we are wrong and you are able to purchase the product at the price advertised, simply send us the competitor's invoice/receipt so that we receive it within 30 days of the date on the invoice/receipt and we will credit your account with 25% of the difference between our current price and the price at which the item was purchased. You can then use that credit towards your next purchase at Great Hobbies. Best Price, Guaranteed!

Great Hobbies will also match percentage discounts and free or discounted shipping promotions that are current, nationally advertised, that can be verified.

We do not match typographical errors in competitors’ ads or websites nor will we match pricing when we know the information to be in error or out-dated. Great Hobbies will endeavour to keep our everyday advertised pricing as competitive as possible and prices are subject to change in relation to pricing from the manufacturer/supplier as well as current currency exchange conditions and federal taxation policies. Great Hobbies will not be liable for changes in price, availability, or description of products. All prices, availability, and specifications are subject to change without notice. We reserve the right to limit quantities sold to an individual customer. Prices do not include applicable taxes. We reserve the right to modify the terms of our price guarantee from time to time.

*25% of the difference extra discount does not apply to percentage discounts or shipping discounts.
Now technically, in the case of the Source, they are not exactly a Canadian Hobby Shop. However, I would not quibble about that fact. They are selling similar product in our marketplace, so I say that we will consider them as well.

Florin, I can only assume that you did purchase that product from The Source. As stated in the policy, please take your invoice to our store so that you can receive your 25% of the difference as credit to a future purchase. I will make sure the staff there is aware that it is OK.

Also, please note the paragraph: “Great Hobbies will also match percentage discounts and free or discounted shipping promotions that are current, nationally advertised, that can be verified.” This should clear up any concerns regarding shipping offers by competitors, as mentioned in previous postings.

If you see or experience something that is uncharacteristic of the Great Hobbies you are accustomed to, please let us know. We are not here to try and tick you off nor do we not care about you just because we are growing. We endeavour to keep the same principals in place regardless of our size.

Thanks for all your continued support guys.

Re: Great Hobbies discount

"I am shocked that Great Hobbies has taken this "we can't meet THAT price" position."
"We are talking principal and it appears to be broken."

John, that's exactly what I felt.

Re: Great Hobbies discount

I had a similar problem when they opened the new store in Mississauga. No prices on the items and when I scanned a couple I found they were over priced. I actually made a comment about it on a thread here on RCC.

A guy from Great Hobbies, ( I think his name was Gary) got in touch with me by email, was polite and apologetic. He explained they won't be beat, it's their policy. Since I didn't buy anything there was no money involved in the discussion.

I am shocked that Great Hobbies has taken this "we can't meet THAT price" position. The perception becomes that they are getting too big for their britches.

I have been in business over 40 years. They, as all business people, should know it takes a long time to establish a great reputation and a short time to ruin it. If you have a policy and don't back it or enforce it, you have no policy and should remove it!

For the sake of a few dollars and the PR involved, I think GH should send you a case of rockets and an apology. We aren't even talking big money here. We are talking principal and it appears to be broken.

I would send them an email and get it in writing to them. I and others would be shocked if they don't respond properly.

Re: Great Hobbies discount

They do have a price match policy on the web site and even a discount on top of it - 25% percentage of the price difference.

From the web site: "we will not only match it, but beat it by 25% of the difference.
Just show us the Canadian URL where the product is priced lower and we'll beat it"

RadioShack price $9
GH price $19
Price difference $10
Discount = 10*25/100 = $2.5
============================
Discounted Final price = 9-2.5 = $6.5

Other price differences were even higher, so the discount should have been even bigger.

Based on the above math, GH sell it on the web site at $19 and SHOULD sell it discounted for $6.5 which I was politely told it is not possible.

I brought the list of URL's, they checked it (and exclaimed woooow) and very politely told me that they cannot match the price...the price on Radio Shack is extremely low...they just cannot do it...they cannot understand how can Radio Shack sell for that price.

The response was courteous, I did not see anything wrong with it. I was very politely told it is not doable. Very courteous response.

Re: Great Hobbies discount

Looks like you'll be shopping at "Radio Shylock" for your rocket parts.

Most hobby shops operate on a hair-thin profit margin and if they don't have a posted "price match guarantee" or similar posting, you'll only get a siscount when you're buying a lot of stuff.

However, it does sound as if you didn't get a courteous response, or you did and didn't repeat it here.

I went to their store and asked to match few rockets price with "The Source" (former Radio Shack) and they refused saying that the price is too low and they cannot do it

Re: Great Hobbies discount

I didn't receive the MAAC 5% discount on my last order either.

I placed another order and asked for shipping quote, 5 days later I received the quote. The shipping quote was absurd, order cancelled.

Hobby Wholesale is much much quicker at bringing items in. Whenever possible my money will going to them now.
