It was indeed. I'm pretty darn sure it was a Murphy Moose with an Allison 250 in it. They are highly regarded and well engineered. IIRC, the chief designer for Murphy was an ex-deHavilland engineer.

'Plotting the percentage of accidents versus the aircraft total time (Figure 3) produces some interesting results. About 6.2% of all homebuilt accidents occur on the first flight. About 19% of the total accidents occur before completion of the nominal 40-hour test period (which can be less for some aircraft)'

'the overall accident rate for U.S.-registered aircraft is about 0.61% per year, while the homebuilt rate is 0.87%. In other words, the homebuilt accident rate is about 44% higher.'

'But the most arresting result: Almost one quarter of first-flight accidents are due to builder error! Finally, see how close the four categories are in the Pilot Error–Failure to Control category. Yes, it’s a bit higher early on, but it stays surprisingly close to the percentage of the overall fleet.'

i was thinking the linkage to the ailerons loosened up during takeoff. Maybe a horn bent or cable jumped off a roller or something. homebuilt engineering.

I agree there is a lot of scripted "drama" going on but Dave really looked shaken up after landing the home built. He looked rattled and his hands were really shaking after he landed. I don't think he is that good of an actor. Perhaps he didn't do the careful check that he should have done...

I'm not sure what to think of this show.....
It's definitely a "reality show" no question. My first impressions after the first batch of episodes.....

In typical reality fashion I call bs on 99% of the "problems" that are show. If the Patriots jet team really had as many major mechanical failures as they show (at least one in every episode) I have a hard time believing they would still be flying.
That wing walker woman actually made me change the channel last episode, I can't stand her, attitude and ego are ridiculous all for an act that frankly as wing walkers go does not impress me in any way.
Super Dave is a good TV personality and I'm sure a great pilot, but the test flight was so bogus. As was already mentioned, the lack of control was ridiculous, at least that's how it was made to appear. An aircraft in that condition would never have passed any safety inspection prior to flying and I would like to think that any test pilot worth a dime would pre flight and find serious problems like that prior to flying.

While I do understand that problems occur in aviation, the regularity in which they seem to occur on "Airshow" seems pretty far fetched to me.
I also despise the way they lead the viewer to think something bad has happened just before a commercial.

I would be far more interested in the show if it focused on the flying aspect more and less on the scripted drama......

another interesting episode, with Dave and the wing walker gal. She hate him with passion.

Re: Air Show Starts Tonight on Discovery ch

Been watching the episodes and have had a strange feeling of deja vu about Super Dave and today I stumbled across why. He was the PiC ferrying a UN owned Dornier 328 (I think) from Yellowkife to Juba in Sudan on an episode of Dangerous Flights (S01E03/4) which aired back in May 2012. Seems he was a bit of a Cowboy way back then (no disrespect for the real ones) .

That huge homebuilt ... gives me pause about the idea of building my own death trap to fly in. Don't know the real story though. With a certified craft you got so much collective learned-the-hard-way-over-50-years (eg Cessna 172) knowledge and engineer standards to follow. With a homebuilt there are just so many more variables and unknowns because so much of it is custom or only built in small numbers, and each build is so very different from the others of the same airframe.
