Re: landing gears

I have drilled out the retract mounts to install the next size bigger wire with no problems. Some come with wire to small to handle the weight of a model.

Re: landing gears

Concur, assuming you're using the specified diameter of piano wire, then the gear's not the problem. A poor grass field might contribute, hence why people tend to use slightly larger tires on grass. On paved surfaces though, there shouldn't be an issue. My Goldberg Sukhoi is famous for it's weak gear, which I've indeed bent, but it was my lousy landing, not the fault of the gear. I've flown a Top Flite FW-190 D-9, very long legged, with stock EFlite electric retracts and legs, never an issue. Cheaper Chinese gear perhaps could be the issue? Hard to know without some specifics.

Lots of guys can take off and do amazing things in the air but in my experience there are very few that can grease landings consistently. Watch at your next trip to the field, some of the most impressive flights end in the "controlled crashes" that pass for landings.

Re: landing gears

you aren't specific about your plane and retracts you have, so its hard to give advice.

Generally, Larger aircraft have larger and beefier landing gear that can usually take a beating. If you are bending those kind of gears, you should not be flying these planes .

Middle size aircraft can either have solid landing gear or weak gear, depending on the diameter of the landing gear wire. Some can be upgraded to beefier landing gear and/or landing gear wire.

Mickey mouse aircraft have micky mouse landing gear wire that bends easy. Not much you can do there except learn to land light-as-a-feather. And even then, there's no guarantee it wont bend.

What are you flying?

Re: landing gears

I assumed (shame on me) you were going to give up on the gimpy in wing retracts and mount fixed gear to the bottom of the fuse.

I have a 30cc that was designed to have in wing gear. never cut the covering. Mounted aluminum gear so the axles were at the front of the leading edge and never have aha issue.

I believe retract are for experienced pilots. New guys lack the finesse in setting up their plane, radio..... it a learning curve to be able to grease every landing, especially on dainty retracts.

Re: landing gears

first to you Brent S!
my landing gears are not just simple straight shaft,
i have to be able to bend it to 90 and 45 deg,
is so hard to shape(bend) the stainless steel and also it is heavy.
aluminum material in 3/16 diameter and 7 inches long it would be so weak you even can bend it when you are taking off,

i like your name
and yeah you are right i get that alot i have to cheat and use gyro which becoming popular.

Re: landing gears

Stainless steel and aluminum bends too easy. The wire that comes with a lot of retracts is Chinese and is very poor quality. good quality steel is made here in north america. Get a piano wire bending rig and make your own. I made my own bending jig. It also winds up nose gear coils.

landing gears

hi every on
just wondering if any body has new idea of using kind of material for landing gear that won't bend that easy!
i have a number of warbird plane that all have retrac but most of them bend as soon as you land a little hard or unlevel
