Re: Build Thread... A few Yellow Aircraft F18's

Hi,

If any of you Hornet drivers (past or present) happens to have a set of the new-style O-ring brakes for this bird (new or used), I am VERY interested to find some. Please let me know!

Thanks! Wow - that is a lot of these F18's. I was blown away with the amount of work involved in these. The second one I did is off to paint.

Here is the thread on the finishing of mine and the second one (Peter's)

This is an ARF I am currently putting together...

I was fortunate enough to have the ARF version nearby so I copied the gap cover process and it worked out awesome.

As for the hinges, I also had a crashed ARF version in my shop (was a complete write-off) and I studied how they glued in the hinges and tried to pull them out with force... impossible with the CF layer between the foam and balsa!!

Cheers

Re: Build Thread... A few Yellow Aircraft F18's

Hi Trevor,

Thanks very much for the response! First off, big salute to your building/finishing skills! This will be my fifth of this bird to build. First one was with a single Ram 1000 (from the green glass kit), then twin P-120's, then a single K-170, then an ARF with two P-80SE's and now this one for a Behotec 200. The ARF had the scale hinges, but I didn't know if they'd glued them into balsa (in the way that the instructions call for balsa hinge blocks put in before the TE caps) or what. I've always used Robart-type hinges because that's what I'm used to. I didn't want to reinvent the wheel if there was a smart way to do these hinges already figured out.

Did you use drawings from the FS bird to determine hinge location? I've also never built the articulating gap covers, so I'm keen on studying how you did it.

Have you flown your bird yet?

Re: Build Thread... A few Yellow Aircraft F18's

Hi Shaun. I have a bunch of those hinges... certainly enough for another build. Send me a PM and we can work out the details.

I cut a slot in the wing and ailerons and glued them in with Hysol 9462. The wing is foam core, carbon fiber and then balsa so once bonded in you are not getting those hinges out. Plus the rear wing spare is there so the hinges are bonded around the spar. The same with the ailerons.. I laid in some CF before glassing and there is the balsa leading edge so tons to glue the hinges into.

Re: Build Thread... A few Yellow Aircraft F18's

Hey Guys!

Couple of questions: What source did you use to determine the location of the scale hinges on the wings? What did you do for reinforcement/mounting of the hinges under the wing skin? Anybody got any of these hinges lying around?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Trevor,, It's always great to put a face to the name. Thanks for the buddy help flying the Boomerang. Two sets of eyes are always better than one. ( provided the acuity is equal).

Re: Build Thread... A few Yellow Aircraft F18's

Finally got a bunch of projects out of the way to be able to get back into these F18's of Peter's and mine.

For Peter's...still need to build the wings, armament and do the bodywork before it goes back to him for paint.

For mine... While the family is away this week, I'm trying to get most of the primer and paint done.

Finishing thread is found here....

There are going to be lots of 18's around this year! I have a 1/6 skymaster f18 on its way painted in the 50th anniversary camo colors. I'll post pics when it arrives!
