Re: DLE35ra having fits

Arnold that little arm that you have the upper arrow pointing to needs to be flat or parallel with the carburetor. In your case you say it is bent up, this will touch the diaphragm and in turn will hold that little needle open, which is your grief. With a flat arm, the needle will be closed. As you turn the engine over the pulses from the crankcase will move the diaphragm in turn opening and closing that needle. I think there is a tool that can be purchased to check the height of that arm, but I just eyeball it.

RSVenture So looked it up on Walbro parts list and they call it "Walbro Valve Inlet Needle". I learned something new today. Yippee.!!!

Re: DLE35ra having fits

I believe you are thinking of the high and low needle valves on exterior of the carb. I am talking about the needle inside the carb that the diaphram works to allow fuel into the carb. Perhaps some call it something else, but I have always known it as a needle valve. I attached a picture.

I checked my Dle 30 and 35 and there is nothing on the carbs that moves the needle valves. The only way a needle valve should move is with a screwdriver when you adjust it. Are we talking about the same thing?

Re: DLE35ra having fits

Well guess what. After sitting for most of the week, went to start DLE 35 today and no dice, No fuel to carb. Could see fuel start to move forward, then it would drop back when flipping prop.
Pulled carb off again. Cleaned carb but had DLE 30 carb also, so started comparing. Only thing I noticed was the holder?? that lifts the needle valve barely IF it moved the needle when operated. Noticed on 30 carb part where the spring sits under, was bent up much further so when operated it lifted needle valve noticeably. So I adjusted the same on the 35 carb. Reinstalled the carb and as soon as I flipped the prop, visibly could see gas moving. Thinking I must have flattened it some when reinstalling after cleaning the carb the first time when I found the gunk in the screen.
So just hoping like hell this has it fixed up. Missed a great day of flying today. We will see in morning if fuel still moves up and it starts after sitting all night.

Re: DLE35ra having fits

So, finally, this should be the last post regarding this engine. Took it out this evening and flew 5 tanks thru it without any issues other than I left it purposefully rich at full throttle. Idles great at 1600. No dead sticks tonight. I'd like to thank all those who replied with help and suggestions which made getting this engine running properly much easier. Thanks all.

Of course I had to make a new tailwheel wire--had it bent by midnight and installed this morning.
And of course, had to have a little something go astray tonight. Doing touch and goes and thought I'll do one more, then timer beeped and so just landed. Taxi towards me and right wheel looks strange. When putting plane in truck, wheel/pants falls off. Apparently a lock nut does not always lock!! But we came home with all the parts.

Re: DLE35ra having fits

Siphoned, drained back into the tank. It did yesterday anyway. Not happening today thank goodness. Why? No idea!!
Mounted engine on my test stand tonight. Ran vent line and a direct line to the carb. Set needles to factory. Started, tuned and retuned several times. Run 2 tanks thru it with no noticeable sputtering. Set it on the rich side. Still only has about 6 litres thru it so not broke in yet. Anyway, confident I have made headway and that it will run on the plane as expected.
As for the tail wheel wire I will have to try to make my own I guess. Even Top-Flite doesn't sell it. Doubt many LHS will carry this item. Not exactly common and often called for part. Can't find an after market proper size or shape.

I put the check valve in for one reason. Gas siphoned out of the line/carb somehow yesterday after sitting for around 40 minutes. After 3 hours sitting it is fine. Check valve is now removed, lines filled with gas, so will wait and see if anything happens tonight.

I am with you Rick that maybe something left in the carb from manufactuer process? The inline filter has the same fine screen as the carb, so it had to be there already I guess.

During first few flights I ran engine quite rich, I did not choke the engine if I restarted within say 15 mins. If it had time to cool some I would give it choke for 1 or 2 flips and it would then start on next flip.

The gurgling and sputtering for the first flights maybe should be attributed to the gunk in the carb than running rich.

Anyway, won't be trying to fly tonight. Beautiful evening, but moved the plane across garage floor and well crap. Tail wheel wire broke flush with fuse. If anyone has had or seen the Top Flite Stinson, this is not going to be an easy fix. The whole thing is hidden inside the fuse with sides and bottom fully plywood sheeted. This will involve a saw I am thinking!! What next?
Wow!! that plane is not in a hurry to reach the sky!!

Where does the gas siphon out from?
