There is a power gain by running the on glow fuel. You can leave the stock spark ignition in place too for a more dependable run. The carb needs to have methanol compatible diaphragms installed though. And fuel consumption is huge!

Re: Weedwacker Conversion

I got a Poulan Pro chainsaw minus the bar at princess auto for $89. Its a 46cc. Don;t get the 42cc as the coil is not mounted on the engine, its mounted onto the saw frame.....makes it harder to convert.
The 46cc runs fine. Its been a few years, but i believe we spun an 18-8 or 18-10, at what sounded like 'a good' RPM....
Also tried running a homelite 25cc on a gas/glow mixture with no spark-plug. Had an adapter with a glow plug. It also ran ok.
Have fun!!!

Well that soulnds like very poor performance.

In our area a Weedwacker motor lasts approx. a hundred hours at work, under all types of conditions and all types of operation. (Words from a weed control operator firm). Just thought I would throw in a thought on the subject.

I had good luck with McClouch 110 saw engines. 1.7 cu.in. 7100 rpm on an 18/6 with stock muffler or 8000rpm with a tuned pipe. Never used a starter on one. The mounts were a bit awkward though.

Re: Weedwacker Conversion

these things need an electric starter to get running. unless converted to electronic ignition. Ryobi twin ring 30cc ive seen turned into a real sweet running engine 18x8 7200 on optimal around 85:1 mix. it can be done

Hey Kevin
Don't loose faith, check out Gary's videos for inspiration.
Note how he starts his conversions, not like a glow where you start the flip from compression stop, but from at least 1/4 turn before the compression starts, this allows you to achieve more speed at the firing point, this is important for the magneto/coil ignitions.
