Re: Twisted Hobbys Crack Yak Build Review

Have got a bunch of flying on this now. This thing is amazing...I think if I had this at the beginning of the season I'd be much further along with my bigger planes.

The LemonRX stabilizer seems to be a great match. Even with the stabilizer it is lighter than the 6 channel Orange RX I had in it originally.

Keep in mind this is my first year flying and I haven't had any formal instruction...after 15 or so flights with this plane I'm doing all the basic 3D stuff, like harrier's and hovers, plus torque rolls, inverted and upright flat spins, and knife edge spins. Just yesterday I started attempting rolling circles and actually made some progress. I've done a bunch of various tumble manoeuvres just screwing around, but I don't know what any of them are called or if they even have names. I can spot land it at my feet over and over again. Haven't really crashed it yet, it is just so easy to fly that you almost never lose control and if you do it can be recovered in a tiny bit of space and time.

To address my earlier concerns...all of the concerns I had during build and setup are completely non-issues when flying. There is some obvious expansion and contraction going on that requires re-centering the controls when moving between temperature extremes...not much can be done about this though.

I anticipate flying this plane everytime I go to fly. For that reason I think I'm going to pick up the MXSC and do a build with higher end electronics. The only reason I'm thinking MXSC instead of another Yak is that the tail servos are in the back of the plane. I think this may help some with the expansion and contraction issue and the build will be a bit easier. I have some ideas about the electronics, like the CC Talon 15 ESC and Futaba 3114 servos. If I get this done and it flies every bit as good as the Crack Yak, I'll probably sell the Yak if someone is interested.

Anyway, this is a spectacular plane, I wish it was one of my first....if you don't have one, what are you waiting for!!!

Re: Twisted Hobbys Crack Yak Build Review

Flew 7 lipos through mine today. What an awesome, extremely fun little airplane.

I feel like I'm cheating because it is so easy to fly. I am a total newb and today I harriered like crazy, hovered, did sloppy torque rolls, knife edge loops, inverted and upright flat spins, and a bunch of other cool looking stuff that may or may not have a name! All this without an incident and I was able to spot land it everytime within a few feet of my feet.

Wind was about 10km/h and very turbulent where I was flying. The Lemon RX stabilizer is just about a perfect match for this plane. It certainly doesn't fly the plane for you, it doesn't have heading hold or auto level, just cuts down the bouncing around. For $18 you really can't go wrong, even if you don't want the stabilizer you can flip it off and have a 7 channel RX that apparently outperforms the Spektrum branded stuff.

I highly, highly recommend anyone interested in 3D, aerobatics or just fun flying when you can't get out to the field, buy one of these if you don't already have one!

I'm still having centering issues with the servos, but once they are trimmed I don't notice any problems with them in flight. I have a feeling the centering issue is at least partly due to expansion and contraction of the foam when I'm taking it out of my warm house into the cold. That is when it is most pronounced.

I will certainly be getting another one to try with some higher quality servos. I'm thinking the new MXS is the way to go, it has the rudder and elevator servos in the rear of the fuse with short pushrods and no guides. I'll be watching to see if they get any cheaper for black Friday!

Re: Twisted Hobbys Crack Yak Build Review

Cory, I was directed to the heavier Crack-Yak by a fellow indoor flier at RIM park. I was breaking my deprons every time I handled them. Also, my flying skills lean more toward a "robust" airframe. I now have a hacker motor, the new Talon 15A ESC and some decent JR servos. I started with a Mystery 12A ESC but the BEC failed and dropped 2V when the ailerons were activated. I find this plane so far above my other 3 foamies and I do also fly it outside. I don't expect to do any 3D (on purpose) and find this a very steady flier.

Re: Twisted Hobbys Crack Yak Build Review

Finally got a few minutes of flying in with mine.

What an incredible little plane...it almost flies artificially, it just maintains any attitude you put it in.

I put a Lemon RX receiver/stabilizer in it, with the stabilizer on it is completely on rails. Wind right now is only about 10 to 15km/h here, but enough to bounce such a light airframe around.

I'm still thoroughly disappointed in the servos, which, granted I should have realized before I bought them. They center so poorly that I have to re-trim everytime I re-power it.

Is there a preferred prop for this plane other than what it came with? Mine required major butchering to get it to balance. I wasn't so concerned about the vibration initially, but the stabilizer doesn't like it! Has anyone tried the APC 9x4.7 slow flyer prop? Does it fit on the hub without any modification?

I like them... I've used them on a few EPP foamies now and no issues. I have NOT yet used them on one of my combat planes - that'd be the real test - but if / when I do I'll let you know how they hold up .

My other fav is a Blue Arrow digital metal gear D05010MG which is smaller and metal gear digital. has shorter arms though, but I often just rig longer ones. I've never stripped one of them and I do use them on combat foamies.

Cheers,
J

I got home and realized I'd have to hack foam to get them installed and I'd have a weight penalty over smaller servos. I dug in my bin and found these HK servos:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...5kg_07sec.html

They were a perfect fit for the servo cutouts, have nice long throw arms, are digital, and have plenty of torque for the surfaces. To top that off they are stupid quick.

Anyway... just put that out there in case others are looking for something between cheap nylon analog 5 grams and name brand and/or heavier servos.

So get on it!!!

So...I think Im going to get one. So would you say not to bother getting their power supply? Would it really make a difference if i used 5g servos....or...could I use 9g servos for everything. Dont want to bother with hobby king parts....I can just get a motor and esc from my LHS.
If you go to the product page here you'll find a couple flight videos and a 4 part build video that describes my build perfectly. You are really just gluing it together with contact cement. There isn't really much to show in pictures, and I promise you their videos will be much more entertaining than any video of me flying. I just started this thread as a review, and so far I think some good pointers have come out of it!

When you say power supply, I'm guessing you're talking about their power combo? IMHO if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks then buy their motor and ESC, if for nothing else, simplicity. You don't need to worry about mounting plate size, weight, prop adapters, etc...it comes with everything you need. As for servos, I think you would be better served by some quality name brand servos.

I personally would try to stay with 5 gram servos for the weight savings, fitment and also because the push rods and guides are pretty thin/fragile. However, some others on here have used different servos and could probably point you in the right direction, and fill you in re. what they had to do to fit them if anything. If others are using 9 gram servos all around and they are working well, then I would say why not.

I have one of each version of the Crack Yak and find the "super-lite" flies much lighter. The Crack Yak Lite may be better if you plan to use outdoors. This year I also tried the super lite version Clik NG and can recommend it for F3P style flying. I really like all of these lite and super lite models from Twisted Hobbys. My Yaks have 1 and 2 seasons of indoor flying and have survived mid-air collisions, basketball net collisions and dumb thumb moves and still in good flying condition. Depron planes are great if you're the only one flying in the gym, otherwise these EPP models win for durability.
