Re: Panel lines Round 2 Also try a clear coat that isn't solvent-based. That said, if the plane is wet fuelled... I don't know if the non-solvent clears are fuel proof. |

Re: Panel lines Round 2 Thanks guys. I think I will try that staedtler pen first with my clear coat. If that doesn't work, I will try that Krylon paint. Once I figure out which way works, I will get back to doing it on the plane. Appreciate all the feedback. |

Re: Panel lines Round 2 I use a Topflite Panel Line pen to mark everything....it never comes off but as always I would do a test off the plane before proceeding. Sharpies (imo) are a PIA. |

Re: Panel lines Round 2 What you want to use for easy panel lines is a NON-permanent marker which is then water base. It won't run when you apply a clearcoat on it like Tremclad or Top Flite LustreKote. That's what I used for the Mustang pictured and another benefit is that it's then super easy to make corrections if you screw up... Alain |

Re: Panel lines Round 2 I was clear coating it because that is what was suggested before and to prevent runs and stuff if somebody runs fuel through the plain. Mainly though to prevent them from wearing off. I had previously clear coated my spitfire because it had a lot of paint on it. Worked very well. I just thought the Sharpie wouldn't run. I used Tremclad clear gloss. Maybe there is wrong ingredient in that? I have used the Krylon stuff for painting. I like that a lot. Maybe I will pick up a can of the clear coat in that and test it. Should it not be sealed? |

Re: Panel lines Round 2 I think this post is rather funny, and could not have come at a better time other than now. Not R/C airplane related, but here it goes. I just built a 1/2a airboat and last night used acrylic paints on it for some artwork. This morning I used a Sharpie as well to outline it so it stands out. I waited about 3 hours then went to the garage and wanted to seal it. The base is Minwax Polyurethane, brushed on, and the topcoat clear I used was also Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane in spray can. Well, I have no reason to explain what had happened, as you already know yourself. The only thing I can think of is to possibly put on a couple of coats 'dry', then follow up with a couple more slightly more 'wet'. This is what I will be trying next time. |

Re: Panel lines Round 2 Just Tryed Krylon low odour clear matte on a test stripe of monokote with a Panel line made with a sharpie. No runs. I purchase it at Micheal's |

Re: Panel lines Round 2 Exactly my question is why would you want to Clear coat? What kind of Clear coat are you using? |

Panel lines Round 2 In the process of building P-51 Big Beautiful Doll. I chose to draw the panel lines on it. Turned out quite nice. Except a BIG problem. I had asked on this forum how to do panel lines. It was suggested to use a Sharpie. Worked beautifully. However, yesterday I started to clear coat the airplane. As soon as I sprayed the clear coat on, all of my panel lines started running. Had to was clear coat and many of the panel lines off with paint thinner. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this issue? Should I not clear coat airplane? Is there a different marker or pen to use? It was looking like this. Any help would be appreciated. |
