Re: 1/4 Spit

Great, soon as I can, have a couple of pics, but nothing too detailed yet. The Don Smith plans are fine, just a lot that's left to the builder's imagination, and I really either didn't understand the dihedral brace, or missed something, so did my own thing on that. OK, so what's the easiest way of getting pics on here?

Other than the wing issues, which I'd heard of in the past, the rest of the plans seem fine, and the fuse certainly went together really fast...
I'm a few years away from building anything giant scale... aspiration's though.
Would love to see some pic's!

Re: 1/4 Spit

I am planning on doing a big spitfire someday and the Don Smith rate high on the list , love to see some pic's. Good luck on the build. As for scratch building, I have two "Big Jets" on the bench along with highly Modified Balsa USA Stearman. Brad "Maddog" Metcalf

Re: 1/4 Spit

Nice, I see some glaze and spot putty, best filler known to man. I'm doing the Spit from Don Smith plans, with a lot of mods. Biggest is the change to a Mk XIV, bigger vertical fin, rudder, and the longer nose. The wing plans are a bit sketchy, no sign of a dihedral brace for example, so instead of webbing, I've cut two spars from 1/8th baltic birch ply, with two top and bottom hardwood stringers, very similar to the real spit's wing setup. Makes framing and alignment much easier. The wing will be very strong, and the added weight is mostly in the main spar, ahead of the C of G. Other than the wing issues, which I'd heard of in the past, the rest of the plans seem fine, and the fuse certainly went together really fast. Covering in tissue and dope, then primer, makes for easy etching of panel lines, and doing rivets. Still haven't picked which specific aircraft I'm doing yet. Would love to hear more of the B-17!

1/4 Spit

I guess I'm going in circles. After many years of R/C, I hung up the transmitters, after building bigger and bigger, and decided to build a real aircraft. That turned into 2, both were just really big sit-in models! After another long break, I'm back into R/C, and now working on a 1/4 spit from Don Smith plans. After some research, and my own experience with the old Pica 1/5th Spit, decided to bump up the Mk IX to a Mk XIV. Larger vertical stab, bigger rudder, and best of all, another 2" to the nose, to help with any tail-heavy tendancies. Wish me luck! Anyone else doing big warbirds, love to hear what's being built out there, doesn't seem to be many scratchbuilders/plans builders left out there.
