Re: 2016 Pattern in Canada. What is happening?

Hi Ivan,

I don't know if you remember me but I was one of the earliest members of the K-W Flying Dutchmen at the tender age of 13 back in 1970. You taught me many times as I grew in my flying whenever you visited the field. I remember even back then you were a legend...at least in eyes of us younger flyers. I went overseas after university and have been up in the Newmarket area for the past 20 years and a member and Instructor with the Aurora Model Aircraft Club.

About 10 years ago I tried IMAC but I struggled with vibration issues, etc. Anyway, with all the move toward electric I have decided to get a Pattern ship and was wondering if you could recommend an aircraft or perhaps you or someone you know has one for sale. I'd like a turnkey aircraft of F3A quality but not necessarily the best of the best.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Cheers,

Don Wallar

I don't check the forum's much anymore, I think most of the activity is on Facebook or RCU, and winter is kinda boring anyways lol.

For the team trials, I know the committee is looking at who will even be interested in trying out. The Worlds will be in Qatar in November 2017, I think due to location and timing my understanding is a number of people are not interested in going (myself included in that list).

If there is not enough interest its unlikely there will be a trials. As for a Nats I have not heard of any proposals to host one. We will be at the US Nats as usual

Yes I understand the Worlds will be in Qatar, it will be interesting to follow this development and see how successful it will be. If Canada does not send a team in 2017 that will be the first time since 1965 I believe.

Like you I plan to go the the US Nationals this year.

I use to go London and watch where they use to hold the nationals. And the the presision of a pattern flier is just amazing even on windy days, and like they said most of the pattern plane are so streamlined, that they fly so fast.

I've been in it for the women forever Gord, I hate to tell it ya that it hasn't really paid off yet! I think RC cars is where all the women went!

The simple answer is, pattern makes good, imacs you famous, I guess its about what your in it for.

Most of who people consider the "best" pilots have extensive histories in pattern at some point. The highest levels of pattern are very difficult and competitive, up to that point its not much different other than the airplanes.

Re: 2016 Pattern in Canada. What is happening?

Good job Bill. Both involve disciplined flying in a precise manner but different rules and sequences. IMAC seems more laid back but then I haven't flown in a pattern contest for over 25 or more years! I am intrigued with pattern going electric and will be giving it a go either this year or next. Very limited pattern planes and overpriced airframes, but love the way a pattern plane flies.
I also love IMAC and nothing is more impressive than those big beautiful planes IMO

Re: 2016 Pattern in Canada. What is happening?

Todd - IMAC is flown with planes that must resemble full scale aerobatic planes i.e. Extra's, Edge's, Yak's, Sukhoi's, Raven's etc. Basic class can fly anything but Sportsman and up have to fly scale replicas (give or take 10%).

Pattern typically flown with very streamlined aircraft - like lawn darts that track very precisely. Do not have to mimic full scale aerobats.

As previously stated there are size restrictions for pattern whereas there are none for IMAC. But IMAC is truthfully not about large aircraft.

There are difference in classes and sequences between the two disciplines - I am not even close to a Pattern expert but I believe there are not unknowns flown in normal Pattern competitions whereas IMAC flies Knowns and Unknowns in a contest (except Basic which has no unknowns).

Pattern also judges take offs and landings, we do not in IMAC. we often have multiple aircraft in the air or taking off and landing.

So - type and style of aircraft, differences in sequences and classes, Knowns vs Unknowns, judging takeoffs / landings in Pattern, not in IMAC.

Please - any Pattern experts correct my errors - just trying to give Todd a straight answer.

Re: 2016 Pattern in Canada. What is happening?

That's too bad Todd. The biggest difference between the two are the planes. IMAC = big and pattern is limited to 2 meters in span and length.
After that the differences are more subtle.
But generally, pattern panes track nicer through the sky.
