Re: Toe in or toe out?

toe in also helps the gear not spread.......toe out spreads gear.....so I run toe in and add lots of tail weight

Re: Toe in or toe out?

Always toe-in.

The concept is that if the wheels are toed-in, as the plane starts to steer off-line, the trailing wheel will transition from toe-in to straight along the line of travel, reducing rolling resistance on that side. On the opposite side, the rolling resistance INCREASES as the leading wheel steers more off-line. The result should be that the side with more drag will slow down, and the side with less drag will speed up causing an automatic correction. At least that's my understanding.

Re: Toe in or toe out?

Toe in will help make the plane track straight on the ground. Toe out will make it wander more. Adding toe in could help nose overs if they're being caused by the aircraft getting sideways on the ground and digging in. Other than that it won't do anything for nose overs.

Like the other guys have said.. Look at the size of the wheels vs the condition of the runway. Small wheels on rough ground will cause nose overs. Failing that, look at moving the wheels out in front of the CoG. Also make sure you're adding some up elevator while taxiing.

What is the plane doing the nose over?

I would look at LG placement, angle, CofG etc. before I worried about toe in/out. Depending on the plane I have seen some minor LG alterations that have cured nosing over without adding any toe in or out. A more forward rake angle on thr LG and sometimes a stiffer LG can help if the stock set up is "soft" for the plane, especially if that the plane is at the heavier end of the weight range.

Yes, toe-in helps in ground control.

But what is your dilemma? Ground control or nosing over?

Re: Toe in or toe out?

Drag causes nose-overs.

Toe-in or toe out induce some form of drag. If you experience nose-overs, neither would be best. Set up your LG with 0 toe-in/toe-out.

Also many people here suggest you grease the axles. I have read this and done this and I can attest that it helps a lot as well.

Cheers.

Toe in or toe out?

Toe in or toe out? Which is better to help prevent nose overs?
