Re: has this ever happened to you???

One thing that I found that kept me going when things seemed to start to drag was to pick a favourite airplane and do the research, gather the materials, and do a real dead nuts scale build of it, adding as much detail to it that you can think of.

I have a project that I have been working on now for a few years. When ever I get bored with other aspects, I go back to my scale build. I'm doing a full interior detail, which has taken me longer to do than it actually took to build the model. Same goes for the highly detailed landing gear. Plus many more aspects of detail that really gets your brain thinking. When it is finished, hopefully this year, it will be a prized model like nothing else I have ever built. Something to really be proud of that I will fly at special events. This has worked well for me and now that it is all coming together, I am getting really excited about flying it.

Because I know that this project is now fast coming to an end, I have selected another to keep me busy and my brain working. I love it and will probably keep doing this for as long as I can, good Lord willing, hopefully for a few more years yet.

I'm with Mark, I became bored years ago, flying just didn't do it for me any more, lack of people coming to the club field etc etc, Bought a helicopter and have pushed myself to learn it as no one for a 100 miles could fly one. Now there are 4 of us on helicopters and I really have fun again, oh and I have planes and heli's and enjoy them and the friendship from my club members.

Can't wait to see how it turns out. That airframe treated me well for 100's of flights.

P.S. - It is the airframe on the cover of the Great Hobbies beginners guides so you are now the owner of a famous airframe...lol

Jeremy (and some follow up posts) brought up a good point. Competing would open a whole new world of dedication and interest.

But if you're truly bored - you're not flying helicopters.

IMAC and pattern are challanging, but I don't find that it has the adrenaline factor that some of us are in the hobby for. I'm an adrenaline junky, but I'm at a stage in my life where I can't afford to spend time in the hospital any more. RC is trying to take the place of motocross, snowboarding, skydiving, kyaking, etc. Sometimes I just like flying, but for the adrenaline side of it I've found that speed and 3D are all that do it for me.

I'll add another vote to the IMAC/Pattern competition route! There's a gentleman at one of the clubs I belong to that was starting to lose interest in his giant scale stuff and flying aerobatics. He's heavily involved in his club, is an instructor, etc.

Long story short, he got into IMAC last year and it's just like he's a kid again! He's really excited about learning new maneuvers and making it all work together and he's LEARNING! For me, that's the best part of the hobby that makes it exciting! Learning new stuff keeps it fresh and exciting!

Although my situation differs from the one above due to the fact I'm only heading into my third full season, I also have enjoyed IMAC competition immensely! My flying improved a tonne just from flying two competitions and practicing for them in between!

Honestly, you should try at least one contest this coming season! It is a lot of fun and the people you meet will become your friends for life!

I ocassionally break up my 3D routine with something fast like a hotliner or 40" pylon racer. A 40" pylon airframe doing close to 200mph is garunteed to give you an adrenaline rush. Best part is you can put one together relativelly cheap compared to other "speed" segments of the hobby.
EXCELLENT!!! There is another great area of the hobby, racing. This just goes to prove how much diverity there is, My first post touched on quite a few different things that I have done, or tried myself, and yet there is a lot more out there. As g.p. and others have pointed out, you don't need to be a millionair. All of the ones I already talked about can be done inexpensively and are loads of fun.
