Re: Takes a lickin' keeps on tickin'

I am a big fan of OS engines because they have been proven to be very reliable over the years.

Nice job on the cleanup, Dean. It looks as good as new!!

There weren't any stains on the engine to speak of, pretty clean. I have cleaned engine parts in the crock pot before and it works great. May be another testament to the OS AX series...hardly and seepage, just clean burning. I usually use a rubber exhaust extension as well. I have a Thunder Tiger 46 and it runs good, but there's always some oil left behind.

That OS 46 AX is an awesome motor. I recommend them for all my students. Thery seem to take prop strikes, "hard landings", bumps and bruises all day with no problem.

Ha ha - yes, second time the HR went down. Too bad, I loved that plane...it just had a really bad color scheme and I kept losing orintation with high speed maneuvers.

To clean the engine (OS 46AX), first I literally washed it in the sink. Cleaned all the dirt out best I could. Then I took it completely apart and used isopropyl alcohol the thoroughly clean it and get the water off. After it dried I rebuilt it using engine oil. Not a fancy process but it worked and the engine runs just fine on the test stand.

Only damage as pointed out was the broken off throttle arm, which I replaced with a tooled servo arm. I'll get a proper one some time, no rush.

Amazingly tough engine!

That is the OS AX series. I'd be making a guess on the size from the pics.

Dean, great resurrection. Glad the crank survived. Other than a new throttle arm it looks good to go. I also suspect the field was relatively soft as the muffler stayed attached.

I too want to know what you used to clean it up?

This engine won't give up! I've crashed it 4 times, rebuilt it 5 times, and it still runs strong. This time it went nose in at full throttle...I pulled it out of a muddy field like a big carrot. It was so caked in mud you couldn't tell what it was.

Aside from the airframe (RIP Harmon Rocket), I saved all the electronics, pilot, fuel dot, and some nice carbon control rods. Another RC adventure.
