Re: Help with Quadra 35 and 40 repairs

I rebuild and test run my US41 (Q42). It turned a zinger 18x10 at 6400 rpm, I was hoping to get a bit more rpm. It also seems to vibrate more than my Q35.

Any comments on either of these issues?

Hope everyone is enjoying some time with there families and thanks for all the help!

Re: Help with Quadra 35 and 40 repairs

Hi Joe I guess first, there should be NO gasketbetween the the crancase They are machined surfases, and made to go together without a gasket. When I put mine together, I put a thin layer of gasket cement on them, just to ensure a seal... The brass washer is there as a thrust washer as you noted. and third, there ain't no easy way.. What I do is to put the connecting rod in place, and cover all the set up with grease, I then use the grease to hold the bearings in place.. IT may take you a few times to do it, but it does work' If you download a CATALOGUE from Bennit, it will show you a breakdown and where the parts should go. Any parts you need for the motor you can get from Bennit, and it will take about 2 weeks.by mail........... Al

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours from all of us,,,,,,,,,,,,

Suggest that you replace the seals while you are at it.

Joe, during assembly any grease will help hold the bearings in place.
As for gaskets, are you talking about the vertical split in the case? If so no gasket.

Re: Help with Quadra 35 and 40 repairs

Al, Thanks for all your advice I really appreciate it.

So I finally had a chance to dissemble one on these engines (Quadra US 41). Everything looks good except for the bearings.

I have a few questions you or the other guys may be able to answer:

1. All there main bearings (3) have the same part number. Does these sound correct? Should there be a thrust bearing or does the brass washers handle the thrust load?
2. There was no gasket material at all on crankcase. Should there be a gasket?
3. When reassembling do you know of an easy way to assemble the loose roller bearings in the connecting rod on the crank journal?
4. Do you know if there is a shop/repair manual out there for these engines? Ya I know, I should have asked this question first. Lol

Thanks a bunch
Joe

Re: Help with Quadra 35 and 40 repairs

If you order your parts from Bennit, you will have them in about 10 days, Like one of the guys said, all the carb parts are available at any small engine repair shops,
To set the mag on the flywheel, I set it at ,003 with a brass shim stock, and set the points at ,015 with feeler gauges. The plug also at ,015. Just make sure that you use the proper plug for R/C use If you use the wrong plug, you will lose about 1500 to 2000 rpm, 8000 to 6000. I find the best plug for me was a Champion RC J8, but there are others that will work.Just make sure they are RESISTER plugs. The only time I find working on the motors is when I completly disasemble them and then try to make sure all the bearing on the connecting rod are back in the right place...The crank bearings can be ordered from any machine shop by the number stamped on it. Good luck with your motors, I had one in a 22 pound 1/4 scale cub, and it was enough power and gave me the extra weight I needed to balance the model. I used an 18X8 prop and I think I could have used a igher pitch, but never needed it
Nuff of this..... Good luck with it, and Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and your from all of us.......... Al

Always call first! No real schedule anymore, heavy into the farming.
But a first class airfield.

Re: Help with Quadra 35 and 40 repairs

Alberta's littlest airport sold lots and lots of Quadra's and were the canadian importer for Byron Originals, big time. That was a long time ago now. But you would be surprised at the remaining inventory.
Call Phylis, or Reg 780 373 3953. Save that I have a dishwash tub full of Quadra parts. There are all kinds of fellows south east of Edmonton with old Quadra's Some even never run, or run very little.
Hope this helps.
