Bondo is also a tricky thing to work with, getting the right spreader and sanding it smooth can take some practice. The good old Canadian Tire has the 3M Bondo, for filling cracks, dings, and imperfections in wood and plastic, and metal , but NOT FOAM. Bondo is a lacquer base and will eat into most foam models.

Using a standoff scale P-51 to get back in the swing of glassing. This now gives me a nother plane to fly this Spring. It is now ready for some paint and sealer.

Toledo RC Expo and Swap Meet was a good trip last Saturday. Got lots of deals, tools, a 40 size engine and 2 gallons of fuel to get a good start on the season.

Getting into fiberglass mode. Got a clean area to mark out and cut the glass cloth. Got a plastis covered mix area, and waxpaper on the work table.

Starting with a simple P-51 wing, 49", with no detail and basic streight line construction, to get back in the swing of things. Using 1-1/2 oz glass on outer wing and 2 oz going on inner section with 2" overlap in landing gear area.

Looking good.....Can't see the overlap or the flass fiber. Light and strong, and very little mess.

The spacer is only 0.030", and the fiberglass is ~0.007 x 2 layers + paint + sealer + sealer on the saddle, all adds up, and the wing bolts will pull up the few thou that may be left.

Just a bit of body filler, some sanding, double check the canopy and cowl fit, and ready for the fiberglass. I will premark any cutouts for PVC detail, top light, and charge plugs as the lines are easy to see through the glass.

Things are going well for March Break. Wing fitup on the body went well with 43.75" from a pin 1/8" in from bottom back of the body to wing tip back as shown in the manual. Holes went in to bolt blocks even and square. Note the spacers on the saddles to allow for fiberglass thickness on the wing.

Looking good. I tried chart tape for the first time these past few weeks, on a Dave Platt 109, TF FW-190, and my P-47. I've got 1/32"and 1/64th". I was worried that the 1/64th would be a pain to work with, but not so at all. Laid out all the tape, two light coats of primer. Then a light wet-sand with 600 grit, followed by removing all the chart tape. Then paint! Simple, quick, and really adds some pizazz. You'd commented on engine possibilities for the TF Spit, think the 15cc gasser would be neat. I've got one with a ST 75 2-stroke, and it's got more than enough power. Anything much larger than a 90 4-stroke would probably be overkill, she's light, and very slippery in the air.

The balsa covering is all on the wing and it is off the build-board. Starting to sand and shape the LE, and getting ready to cut off the ailerons and flaps. I left the inner section of the lower side flap 3/4" hinge gap open on the wing to add some polyurethane glue to the inside to strengthen it up. I have the LG and folw down landing light marked out on the underside of the wing.

I have been using my new Samsung Galaxy Note II to take pictures of the build this year and resizeing in the Paint Program that also allows for easy labels on the pictures. The phone has a nice 8 Mp camera that will focus very close and is clear and sharp, if I hold it halfway still.

P.S. make sure all the mounting blocks are glued inside the wing and marked with pin holes on the outside. Wire feeding string is also fed through the wing before the wing is closed up.

Wing covering is going well. Snow shoveling not so well, stiff....
The local Winter Indoor Fun Fly went well too.
I got my wire holes in the ribs so there is a easy path for the NAV light wires and tank/bomb drop servo wires to get back to the body.

The joining of the wing sections went well. Only a bit of glue got onto the untaped part of my 2" high dihedral block, -0.050" to keep it all level and close the gap on the center rib. 1/20 of a inch took the stress off the plywood wing bolt-through and rested the rib 11 tabs back on the blocks.

I used my Polyurethane glue to join the flat surfaces and after clamping, a bit of CA on the cross ends and edges. The new Elmer's Ultimate Glue gives lots of time for setup, 30-40 minutes to when it starts to get stiff, but can still move up to the first hour. I find it soakes in and grips to the wood much better than epoxy, and no mixing. It can also fill gaps better as it will expand as it hardens, and expand a LOT if sprayed with a bit of Windex with Amonia in it. This is good for fillits and stiffening balsa and fibreglass construction.

OMG........ After months of fighting with the landing gear struts, I was looking at them and noticed they were different in size !!!!!!!!
Yes....One of the struts is 10mm shorter than the other on the lower offset part.
It has been over a year from the date of buying them, but I have contacted the seller to see what can be done. It was only when I started to fit the wheels on them that I noticed the problem. I am upset with myself for not seeing it sooner, as this has caused me much greef and lost time trying to set it up.
The drill out of the trunion from 3/16" (0.1875") up to 5mm (0.196") should be no problem, as it is very close. Getting some 5mm springsteel cut to 45mm to extend the oleo strut should be easy too.
Well I will just have to work on other parts untill I get the strut problem solved. I could use standard 3/16" strut rod to get the Robart 85* trunion setup and continue with sheeting the bottom of the wing.

Re: TOP-FLITE P-47 RB 1/8 scale w/ NAV Lights

The cowl glued together well once I got it cut back to the right set of inside lines in the plastic. It should be ready for some fibreglass strips to stiffen it up, as it is fitting the body mounts with just a bit of play. I need to have extra space for the glass on the body. A ring of bristol board should help to set the right gap.
