Re: Need advice ultracoting J3 Cub

I think I will try to build one then from what was provided adding a little more ply to beef it up a bit. In the future I will be looking at the HK mount. Thanks for your help, time and encouragement. I'm thinking I may just go ahead and try a flight now. What the heck, I do like making planes, which is similar to fixing planes I guess .

Don't be scared of the Cub, its a great flyer. You just need to be aware of the torque roll, that is all. Get used to using the rudder and you will be fine.

And it is built pretty tough. I put it up into tall poplars twice last year (50' tall), and had to cut the trees down to get it. Of course upon the tree coming down, it grabbed the plane and threw it under itself trying break its fall. But of course, the tree being heavier, the Cub could not cope with the weight issue upon catching the tree.
I broke the wing twice then, fuse once too. Snapped off the engine mount 3 times during other instances, and when I got tossed by a huge wind gust just upon takeoff, into the trees along side me, sheared off the stab flush along the right side, while clipping the wing making it look like I was attempting a clipped Cub version.
Nothing some spare balsa, CA, bit of new covering, and some patience does not care of. Still fly's great, tracks well, no problems.

I made my own actually out of plywood, but my other planes have mounts from HobbyKing, Well built, lightweight, and the price is right.

The GP is quite heavy, that is why I never bought it.

Or use one of these styles. http://www.hobbyking.com/UNITEDHOBBI...idProduct=5318
I have an extra one of these I could part with, but the shipping would be $11 for sure. Canada Post sucks.

I was afraid of that. (hence the name, torque roll) My plan was to get a Telemaster and learn to fly it before attempting the Cub.
If I could trouble you with just one more question, what kind of a motor mount did you use on the cub? It was suggested I use a GP brushless medium, supposedly made of alum., and I think it weighs as much as the rest of the plane. It looks like you could mount a v8 to it! The mount provided in the kit seems a little lite, but if reinforced it would still weigh 1/4 of the GP mount.:

The torque roll is worse in real life, the sim makes it easier than it is.
It not only turn left, but try's to roll as well. But not uncontrollable as I can easily fly it now after figuring it all out.
It was my first large 4 ch, all others were only 3c. Now I fly my big P-51 as well, no problems.

Re: Need advice ultracoting J3 Cub

Your welcome. The system I just ordered is, GP Axi .15 35-36-1200 Outrunner brushless, SS-45 electrify esc/bec, an electrify 3S 11.1v 2200mah 25c Lipo, and 2 props to try them out so far , 10x7 and 11x 5.5. Great minds seem to think alike .
I have been practicing with a simulator and have experienced the torque roll issue. (turns left as it rolls down the runway) If I'm not imagining it, and if the program is real, it seems that the drift to the left ends, mostly, when the tail lifts.
Thanks for the report.

OH yeah, has well over 100 flights on it over the last 2 summers. No magical powers, just perseverance and determination. Thanks for the compliment.

Fly's great, but be forewarned that during takeoff, right rudder is required or it will torque roll left. Other than that it is a great easy day flyer.
I use a 3S 2200 ma, 11x7 prop, and Turnigy AerodriveXp SK Series 35-30 1100Kv / 345w. More than enough power and very dependable.

What you have for your power combo?

Xanadu, that is the same model that I have. You must have magical powers to have put the 4 strips on horizontaly. That is what I tried but ended up doing them vertically.
Have you flown the Cub yet?

Re: Need advice ultracoting J3 Cub

I messed my covering up the first time doing that section as well. Ended up using 4 strips instead.

Re: Need advice ultracoting J3 Cub

I just thought I'd pass along a problem I had with the GP Electricub manual. In the front it shows some possible Power Systems. I ordered the 'Best' system. Unfortunately the manual shows the part number for the T600R electric motor as (GPMG0700) which is wrong. The number for the reverse rotation motor required for use with the gearbox should be (GPMG0705), unless of course one plans on fly backwards.

Good luck with your build.
