Re: FAA Registration

I’ve been doing this for some years now and have worked out a pretty good system. None of my planes have stickers on them the radio transmitters have a number inside the battery compartment. The reason they have not stickered my planes is the description given is pretty detailed.

I had to come up with something in 2005 when I started to help/pilot for the University of Windsor’s SAE Aerodesign Team. I transported their models and the support equipment (which belonged to me) to the competitions in the US. I would bring several of my own planes to fly and up to 4/5 of theirs plus spare parts and all kinds of tools. Van and trailer full and enough support equipment to do major repairs at the field and motel where we stayed.

Models were described by colors, wing span length and motor no number or other identification needed, radio transmitters by name and model. Each tool in its case, toolbox, and generator anything of value was assigned a number. The number was written on the item in magic marker. The number system is simple starts at 1 and continues. The master list on my computer has each number along with a description of the tool/item. New stuff is added to the end of the list with a continuing appropriate number.

I was told at the border that the list could only contain what I am transporting at that time so unless everything were the same I would need to present an updated list each crossing and be issued a new green card.

All you have to do is bring up the master list on your computer and delete everything you’re not taking then print it and you have your new update list for the border.

If you’re taking the same stuff over and over again the original list and green card should work fine.

In Windsor at the Tunnel I park in the Duty Free parking lot, walk through the pedestrian entrance between the Duty Free and the big gate and go through to the customs offices. They may or may not come out to look at your stuff.

Re: FAA Registration

Thanks Bill... that would be much easier and closer! And I won't have to be pulling my trailer and kids at the time

Re: FAA Registration

Jason - another possible option is the CBSA office at London Airport. Was not sure if there was one but I see one listed.

I had my planes stickered at the KW airport. I have heard intermittent reports that CBSA does not sticker items anymore, but I had my last plane done at the KW airport last July. In my case I parked my trailer in the airport parking as close as I could get to the terminal, went into the office, explained what I wanted and a CBSA officer came out with me to write out the green card and handed me the sticker for me to put on the plane.

Truthfully I have had the green card for my transmitter and planes for years (just like Frank). I find that no one ever asks to see it, but when I am coming back and they ask me what's in the trailer, I reply that it is a large RC model plane and I have a green card and sticker for it. They just wave me through.

But I also have friends who have run into situations where an officer asks for proof that the plane is Canadian and not purchased in the US. Having the green card makes it all very easy. Of course one CBSA officer told me that an original sales receipt is the best proof of all. Yes of course, however some of my planes are bought second hand so not as easy to provide the sales receipt.

Thanks Frank. I'll keep an eye out next time I go through.

Re: FAA Registration

The other good part is if you show them at the US side you have registered the items with customs it sort of confirms your not bringing them across to sell and will be taking them back with you when you go.

Re: FAA Registration

Guys, I believe you are discussing a process that has existed for years. Declaring anything of value that you are taking in so that you will not be required to pay taxes etc. in error when returning. Standard procedure. If you don't it maynot be a problem. If you do it will not be a problem when you return.

Re: FAA Registration

Interesting. So the parking lot you speak of at Sarnia - is it the same one you go into when they pull you over to pay taxes?

Thanks,

Re: FAA Registration

I wouldn't say it's new, I've had my card now for 7 or 8 years. Not necessarily for big stuff only as my radio is carded.

Re: FAA Registration

Thanks. I'll have to have a look. I'll be travelling with a gaggle of planes, tent trailer, 2 kids, and packed car. The last thing I want to do is have them ask me to open my pop-up .

Last year I went down with no questions on the way back and the year before. Also, just came back from NEF and other indoor events and no hasstles. So, is this new or just for the big stuff?

Thanks,
J
