Re: Painting over a Dope Fimish

You might want to establish what kind of dope is on there. Also, latex isn't fuel proof.

Butyrate is more common than nitrate in the hobby stores, so tends to be a more common finish. Also I don't think nitrate dope comes in colors...Maybe that'll help identify. If not, maybe a test blob of paint to see if it'll peel off easily or not? Probably not a bad angle of attack in any case.

Covering nitrate is a snap with oil based paints (which makes the finish fuel proof). But you're right; it stinks something terrible.

I don't know about anything except butyrate that adheres to butyrate. Sounds like the previous posters have more experience with it than I do.

Too bad it doesn't cover latex. I too have painted over Butyrate without concern. The chart above has been a great resource for me.

With the strength of todays exterior acrylics it will be fine as long as you sand the dope with like 1500 grit before hand.

I have put Klasskote over butrate dope with very good success.I have also put it over nitrate with the same very good success.I think a latex paint would not be a good choice though.

Now it's been so many years, I really don't remember if it was nitrate dope or butrate dope that I used, I vividly remember that it was SIG product that was in small tin cans with white, red and blue label on it and it was clear dope... But I do know it never cracked or chipped or peeled off any paint from the model.

Here is my first Learjet's picture from back then in one of 2-3 Model beauty contests it participated that John Dutkoski used to host at November "Hobby shows" at International center here in Toronto back in mid to late 90's...

I am presently finishing a large scale Tiger Moth which I sealed the covering SIG's
coverall with nitrate Dope. I let the dope gas off for over a month before I started
spraying with acrylic exterior latex paint. It is my favourite finish for large gas jobs.

Since your model is old, you do not have the problem of dope gassing off which would
push out finishes other than dope products. Clean it well make sure you do not have
any oil residue. If it is a gas job no problem but if you have a nitro (glow)fuel model,
you will have to spray a sealant to fuel proof your model. Varathane, urethane are good.

Do not use nitrate dope because you do not know what kind of dope is underneath.

Roy Vallaincourt from Vally Aviation do gives some good advice on how to finnish
a gas model with Latex over nitrate. Check his site.

Re: Painting over a Dope Fimish

My experience with dope has been different from what Kip has mentioned. Many years ago I built my first Great planes Learjet, I was advised then by a senior modeler to use dope and silkspan to cover the aircraft and then paint it. So after few coats of clear dope and sanding it lightly, I had the surface I wanted ready for primer and paint. I remember using auto primer spray cans from Canadian tire auto section and then used Ford's white and dark blue color match paints...it's been since 96 since i painted this model and to date, paint hasn't chipped from it....it did suffered hanger rash over the years but paint itself is still pretty good on it still....

Most aircraft are painted with butrate dope. The only thing that sticks to butrate dope is itself. Everything else after a short period of time comes off in big sheets. Aircraft Spruce in Brampton have a large selection of colors. Clean the oil off with lots of alcohol.

Painting over a Dope Fimish

I recently got a plane that appears to have a dope finish on it and I want to do some repairs. Due to the odours I plan on using something other than dope to paint the repairs and I am looking for suggestions on what to use. I would like to use a latex paint and would scuff the dope finish first and then spray on light coats.

Thoughts, comments, pros/cons or other suggestions would be appreciated. My goal is a suitable finish with as little odour as possible.

Thanks,

Chris

PS Sorry about the spelling in the title, I tried to fix it but I can't seem to get back to it.
