Excellent method Flypaper! However I am sure there are users out there that aren't aware of how to do this and get into trouble.

The pack voltage of a lipo can be used as an indicator of charge level. However using one in a radio that lacks a numerical TX pack voltage reading and/or one that has a charge indicator/alarm calibrated for Ni-mh is asking for trouble. You really need to be aware of what you are doing.

The DX8 on the other hand was designed to run on Lipo and both the display voltage and alarm voltage levels are adjustable. There is a good argument to use a lipo on the DX8 as it doubles the run time of the radio and there is very little self discharge.

Lipo and LiFe are great batteries but in the TX remember, they render the voltage meter useless. You never know how much power you really have left as voltage cannot be used to determine their state of charge.

A friend crashed his turbine jet when he did the "charge once a summer" thing with his Futaba radio converted to Lipo.

The battery meter gave no indication that he was about to run out of juice.

LiFe all the way .my 1500 LiFe lasts like lipo without the higher voltage, for those that feel it's a problem . I guess for me it's easier as I use A123 in all my planes , this way you dont have to keep changing your charge type in the charger.Roger

Re: Jr 12X battery solution

I see HK has the DX8 lipo batt. in stock now and I just ordered one.

I have the OEM Lipo pack in my DX8.

At 4000mAh, the battery life is insane! I charged it up in June and have been flying with it all summer... about 6-8hrs per week. I still have ~50% capacity left.

Re: Jr 12X battery solution

Another option for JR and other TX's that take the square TX batteries:

Hyperion 9.6V LiFe pack

You'll need the adapter:

JR battery adapter

These packs are specifically designed for TX's and come with charge circuitry built in that is compatible with charging systems found in most TX's. No need to remove the pack for charging. The 9.6V output is identical to a Ni-mh pack.

If you want a Ni-mh solution, Great Hobbies sells a pre-made Sanyo Eneloop pack with a dual (Hitec & JR) style connector. Much cheaper/easier than fabbing your own:

I really like those Eneloop cells. The self discharge rate is very low!

i have seen what happend to what tree a few time in the past few years .
the fact is that are radios have been built to support nicads but some have programs to change the batt but the radio is made for nicads
they have worked fine for the past 40 years why change now !
I guess there is some risk assiciated with charging a lipo inside the radio. I'd sure hate to have the 12X contribute to the fire.....

But then, I don't remove the lipo from my Tx, just charge through the balance plug but bower the Tx through the output plug.

Re: Jr 12X battery solution

No reason to take the batt. out to charge it. I put a HK trans. lipo with a diode in a DX7 about 3 yrs ago. I put a servo type connector on it just for charging, didn't even disconnect it from the trans. Sold it last fall when I bought the DX8, (by the way you can get an optional lipo batt. for it), and the guy that bought the DX7 is still using it. I killed it twice by leaving it on overnight while bench testing and it came back fine. Thank goodness the DX8 has a loud buzzer that goes off if you leave it on for more than 10 mins without being used.
