Re: Repairing a HS Swift

Has anyone ever tried to convert one of these to a 2.4Ghz? They are a tough little heli, but the controller is kinda crappy. I can't help wondering if it would be too much trouble to convert it. I would also like to solder in a connector so I can use the plug in lipo batteries.

Maybe try dipping it in really hot water for a few minutes before you try and pull it off. Not the whole heli, just the rotor head

Here is a picture of mine with the head removed. The top of the shaft is knurled in order to create a tight fit, although you cant really see that in the picture.

Yes this is correct. If you look at the picture in the post a few posts above this one, you can easily see the black plastic piece at the very top of the main rotor shaft. This piece holds the blade grips and the balance beams/flybar. I have the top blades and the flybar removed so only this piece I'm trying to remove remains.

Honestly, I have tried pulling & twisting as hard as I dare without breaking either the gears or the shaft and it just simply will not budge. I guess I will try the side cutters and see if that works. If this setup is that tough to get off, I may have a whole new problem trying to reinstall the new piece. I was told I may have to run a drill bit slightly larger than the hole through it so that the new piece will slide back on. I hope its not too difficult to do once I get to that point.

The rotor head came off quite easily. After removing the setscrew and unclipping the ball links, it pulled right off. The flybar can then be removed by pulling out the pins with a small pair of pliers. There are 2 pins, one on each side.

I hope it's ok if I put in a good word for the place where I bought it:

Excellent service. This heli is widely available from Hong Kong for about 30 bucks, but I decided to pay a little extra to buy it locally. I ordered it last Monday, and had it in my hand on Wednesday. My flybar broke yesterday (Saturday), and I should have my replacement by Tuesday.
Glad you enjoy it. Wow, let me tell you, I still haven't gotten mine repaired. Every once in awhile I take it off the shelf and tinker a bit trying to get that rotor head off with no results. I am afraid of breaking something else like the main shaft which is just light tube steel, so I just put it back away. I was able to get the parts in stock at the hobby store where I purchased it, so that was not a problem.

I talked to the guys at the hobby store again a couple of days ago about this and one of the boys said to use a pair of small side cutters and clip away at the plastic head until I remove enough material to loosen it enough to come off. Fortunately, I have such a set of cutters I purchased for cutting model railway rails. Hopefully that will work! Maybe that's my best bet to get the job done, because I have tried pulling on it as hard as I can and it just will not budge.

Thanks for chiming in! It really is a great looking and fun flying little Heli!

From your last post it kinda sounds like you want to remove the rotor head or the head block?? Is this correct?...if its stuck, pull up on it slightly and also pull in the opposite direction on the main gear that drives the top set of blades and turn them both in opposite directions back and fourth...it should pop right off. Its hard for us to give advice without seeing the model....hope that helps

cheers

About like the difference between a go-kart and a real car.

That looks a lot like the toy I bought my grandson at London Drugs in December.

With the small co-axial rotor head I would think it would be dead simple to fly, as was his.
Phil, I know the toy helis you are talking about. I believe they have the foam body and non functioning tail prop (just for show) Sold at places like K-Mart & Wall Mart for $19.99 or there abouts? Would I be correct?

This one is actually a neat little heli with full metal frame, tail boom with metal support rods & metal rear fins. Has an actual plastic canopy with flashing red and green lights and it does have a functioning tail rotor. It also has a hard wired 135 mAh lipo inside the canopy.

Purchased it at the local hobby store for $69.95. Its one of the nicest helis of its kind I have ever seen.... no comparison in looks or functionality to the cheepy foam type helis.

Jim - Did you get your replacement parts and repair your Swift yet?

Hey, yea i own 2 of these little birds and know exactly what your talking about.

After you take out that little screw on the shaft, it will be really firm but the head will jsut slide off if you pull hard enough. I had the exact same problem and had to replace it.

gl..

lol my next project is goin to be trying to convert the IR to FM or 2.4 lol wish me luck
