Re: DA 50 not firing

We will never know not unless we ask and that is the great tool of the internet.

Re: DA 50 not firing

Well Gordon its looking like i owe you a box of timbits, installed the new to me DA ignition reinstalled the pick up sensor, added the fresh gas, left the canister muffler attached and fired her up.
Took about 10 flips before she popped flipped choke off, 4 flips she stared right up. Run the tach might need some adjustment low end but at WOT spinning 7100 rpm.

I guess next thing is to maiden and fly the baby. Once i get the courage of find someone to do it.

Thanks guys for the help.

Well my arm is sore from flipping so checked plug yes i have spark, tried gas, i have gas to carb but nothing further so i know its carb related, removed end covers looks ok so next question is how do i clean it or should i just rebuild it and where do i find a rebuild kit. Its a Walbro 201b. carb.
Funny i just went threw that process and it is not a carb problem u are having..Set carb to manufacture setting..Spark plug cap has a double snap..U might think u pushed it all the way up and in my case i did not..1st turn your ignition on and make sure your choke is closed..Some da enginges actually do not joke were plate on carb has air or a gap on choke plate..Adjust your throttle setting 2 half way when joking..4 flips it should of popped..Once popped turn throttle to a quarter setting..No more than 3 flips and it will fire..What i think u done is flooded the engine which u can flip all day in this case..Another note is never turn spark plug cap when taking it off which u will wreck the wiring in the boot which u will have to replace the boot..Always pull straight down..If it is flooded be darn carefull which the prop will spin exstremly fast and break a finger on a wood prop ..In my case it happened 2 me and a freind of mine on the same motor..Lucky it was not broken fingers but a darn sore one with a glove on..New motors have alot of compression..

Re: DA 50 not firing

Well in the ignition is on its way, i have the original muffler in hand, but this weekend we are 250 km away at the trailer closing it for the season.
I do have plans on installing the DA ignition on the engine once I get it, so hopefully it will run sweet then and I will finally get to fly the thing.

Re: DA 50 not firing

I'll bet you a box of Timbits that the DA ignition and properly set pickup will solve all issues. Good luck! I hate chasing motor issues!!!!

Re: DA 50 not firing

I have started at factory made adjustments and gone back to factory, engine does run but can not get rpm above 5400. I will try running again on thursday night if i get a chance and try new gas slight tweek of the pick up seeif it makes a difference

Re: DA 50 not firing

just re reading and to note I am using the RCExcell halls sensor set at 28degs not the DA sensor. so once I get the DA ignition I will have re install the sensor but I am sure I marked the that when I removed it.

Re: DA 50 not firing

Bill the original one failed, sent to DA deemed toast, let it sit for a bit looking for used one, as new its pricey, finally got the RCExcell one and installed, now just dragging it out back out with the intent of getting it ready to fly or at least maiden this year.
I pulled the trigger on a used DA ignition, tested by DA, but I have to wait for it to arrive, but trying to get this thing at least ready to go. it fires up ok now, but I wouldn't say runs great, I have too many variables on what might be causing the low rpm at full throttle, gas, timing, exhaust, carb settings
as the plane is stored in the basement behind the furnace to keep our 16 month grandson away from it, it not so easy to keep bring it out, I cant store it in the truck hmm I brought a 51/2ft bed and I have a 61/2ft plane I didn't think that thought to well, and with work and life I pick and choose days to get everything out the way blocking it in.
I will be mixing new gas this week to eliminate that, hopefully I can get the original muffler back from my buddy to rule the canister out, so that would leave either the timing, or the carb as the issues.....I Hope.
I am looking for Redline but hard to find, I do have some Amsoil Sabre 100-1

Re: DA 50 not firing

Alan - if I were you I would put the DA ignition back and not use the other one. As someone else said it makes little sense to cheap out and use the other one, stay with the DA one that was intended for the engine.

From the DA50 manual - 89-91 octane gas - that is what they recommend - Oil - Redline 40:1 or Stihl Ultra 50:1

Re timing - i found a direct answer from DA themselves - dates back a few years but might be useful to have:
The first thing you will want to do is take a fine line sharpie pen and draw a line at the leading edge of the magnet on the prop hub to the front of the hub. (as you look at the engine from the front that will be on the left side of the magnet. Then you need to take the spark plug out of the motor and put a small dowel rod inside the motor and just let it rest on top of the piston. Slowly rotate the motor over the direction that it runs, until the dowel comes all the way out of the plug hole and starts to go back in. Center the rotation of the hub by the dowel going in and out and this is top dead center. Now your mark you made on the hub on the leading edge of the magnet should be under the sensor. There is a small hash mark on the front of the sensor. Your mark should align with hash mark and this will be perfect.

But the above presumes that you are using the DA sensor and not an RCEXL one.

From what I read the timing of the DA sensor is closer to 5-8 degrees BTDC and the RCEXL needs to be around 28 degrees BTDC. Two different animals and apparently the RCEXL may need totally different holes drilled in the hub for the hall sensor as compared with the standard DA sensor. I am not sure of this but I think one system is auto-advance and the other auto-retard.

I would just go back to the DA ignition and forget the other one. Too many variables by changing things in my opinion.
