Re: Hawker Sea Fury - Scratch!

Well, after over a year of just a passing glance, as well as many other life changes (finishing school, kids, another kid on the way, kids sports, renos, etc etc etc), I think it's time to let this project go.
If anyone would be interested in continuing a scratch build project, I'd like to sell everything related to this. For the plane itself, all I'm asking for is coverage of the cost of wood (as mentioned previously, I have invested over 200 hrs so far between labour and re-engineering). As well, I have a box of parts destined for this bird when the time comes: A complete retract kit, struts, cylinders, sequencers, servos, servo wire, valves, wheels, hinges, etc. Most are still in packages, some items have been removed only for dry fitting. I'm asking for sticker price only, since they're brand new. I'll eat the tax, shipping, etc.

I'm at work now, I'd have to go home and total everything up, but I estimate hardware at approx $200, and lumber approx $40-50ish.

I'd like to keep everything together, since the plans were re-engineered around this hardware.

Cheers

Re: Hawker Sea Fury - Scratch!

Well, its been quite a long hiatus since I've even touched this build, nothing done since the wing panels were joined and flap sections started. During the flap building time I discovered one of the ribs in an outer panel was off by about 1/4", it will involve significant product removal on the top and rebuilding on the bottom (discovered this by trial fitting a flap).
At this juncture of time, I'm almost done school but also at a point in life where I'm not really sure if I'll ever get around to working on this again. I do think about it once in a while, and often envision it being finished.
Right now I'm seriously debating selling the build with all the equipment specifically purchased for it. I'd also include plans, as well as re-engineered drawings that I've done for it. Total time into the project exceeds 200 hours.
If anyone is interested in continuing the project lets touch base.

Can't wait to see it done John, that is one big plane.

Good luck with your build. I think a date to finish your project motivates the builder to press on thru the hard parts of the process. Our Seafury will be powered by a 3W-210 twin spark engine and the colour scheme is likely Korean War vintage .

Wow lookin good! Whats the power selection and colour scheme? Radial perhaps?????
I now have a solid deadline of August, I'm going back to school in September to upgrade my skills, so I'd like to have this flying by then.

Warbird_ace Flap production time. Probably overkill, but each flap segment has 3 pinned hinges, glued down, with a doubler over top, and each hinge will receive 4 wire pins to secure them in, prior to receiving a layer of glass. With a control horn sandwiched in there too.
I figure, heavier bird, oversized radial motor, built for speed, probably going to need decent flap system. I'd really like to not rip all 4 panels off on the first flight. Going to need some decent servos too, if anyone has a couple decent high torques they wanna unload?

Re: Hawker Sea Fury - Scratch!

Well, using a combination of techniques I was successfully able to glass the retract well. I was fortunate enough that I purchased 30min epoxy last year when I started glassing things.
Using the same 2oz cloth, I cut a piece bigger than the rib getting glassed. I then pinned it down with some fancy high tech clothes pins I had on hand. Once it's in the general right spot, epoxy was mixed (at room temp - which is still somewhat thick). Using my heavy duty heat gun, the part itself, with the cloth, was heated for about 15 secs. Hot enough that you can't touch it for more than 5 secs. After that, I gave the mixed epoxy a quick blast of heat to make it warm and thin, and then painted it on with a small artists brush.

Warming cuts the set time by about half I've found (in this case, 15ish mins). More than enough time to get the glass painted on. I didn't snap pics of the process, but if the finished product comes out pretty I'll post it up.

Thanks to all for the tips and help in this matter, I am getting closer to adding fiberglassing to my repertoire of skills I've acquired during this project.

Re: Hawker Sea Fury - Scratch!

Thanks for the info Michael, I have a heat gun that should do the trick nicely on the ribs. I'll try it tonight and see how it works out.
