Re: Building a 25% scale Sukhoi MX26

Thanks for this build thread. It is great to see a scratch built plane fly so well. You have also given me a couple great ideas for improving the set uup on a plane I just purchased used. I am looking forward to the next video. Phil

Re: Building a 25% scale Sukhoi MX26

Thanks guys.
This thing is a breeze to fly but you have to kill the engine to land otherwise it just floats down the runway.
Brad was asking one time about why use a thick wing. Well, when I throttle back to idle 1800 to 2000 rpm on a 19/8 prop the plane will float the length of the runway. If you do that my buddy's Funtana (thin wing and slightly smaller) it comes down and lands quickly. IMO thick wings handle similar wing loads better than thin wings
The gear was not bent (carbon fiber). It had pulled the bolt out of the oak mounting beam, so it looks like I am going to have to wax a bolt and then fill the hole with epoxy and re-insert the bolt when the epoxy is still wet.

All part of the learning curve when using bolt on landing gear! I am more used to using bent wire gear. lots of spring and easy to get the landing loading into the fuse but just would not look good on this set-up.

Bob and I are going to try and shoot another video next week using his other camera. That should be more successful.

Nice flying plane Paul, congrats. Piece of cake to straighten the gear for you I am sure.

Nice plane Paul. Has plenty of power and behaves quite well.

To bad about the bent gear on landing. Minor, considering what could have happened.

Bob shot the video for me last evening...not the greatest camera work but hey it was free and he wanted to try his new camera in video mode. I was actually flying in quite close and he had some trouble following me.

The motor quit near the end of the flight but I may have been a bit rick as I had changed fuel to a 50:1 synthetic oil and the motor is getting broken is , as opposed to just plain broken!

That vertical climb out at the beginning was on half throttle.

was nice to see it floats on dead stick though.

There are two videos, first one is the flight

and the second is the dead stick landing..the wind quit on me just as I turned in to it.

and this effectively ends the build. It was fun to do and quite rewarding to fly....now to start to learn the IMAC sequence!

Re: Building a 25% scale Sukhoi MX26

Flying has been kind of limited last month due to RAIN and WIND and more rain and wind etc. Our field is just soaked and a couple of spots are really soggy so I have not had the plane up too often. A very gentle touchdown or just rolling over a wet spot and the wheels dig in and spin the plane around. I think this contributed to me breaking the landing gear, that and it was a bit too light for the plane.

I have some heavier gear on the way from Graphtech and it should be here this week I hope...customs and Canada Post dependent.

The plane flies great. Inverted is virtually hands off and there is just a touch of pull to the wheels on knife edge. Both of these will be solved with a bit more rearward balance point. With the ailerons on high rate (about 70 degrees throw) you get really fast rolls. These look like 2 rolls a second....blink and you miss them...lol
The verticals stay that way up and down and stall turns seem to pivot around the canopy. The plane definitely makes me look to be a better flier than I really am.
Landings on a calm day are "interesting" as it just wants to float down the runway even with the engine killed .

I am really happy with the plane and it was worth the effort. I will get a video posted as soon as I can get a calm sunny day and my camera guy co-ordinated.
