Re: Desperate to go slope flying

Yeah, okay, I figured that out about 40+ years ago, hasn't failed me yet...

We have days up there where one can watch a hawk go by 200' out, rising as it goes, but there is no wind on the slope itself. More than once, I have taken the chance and launched without having the Long Walk, but it is sure tough on the nerves! Besides, I'm sure one would gain about 5 pounds in the cacti gathered on that hike. It is beautiful country, but there are tradeoffs.

Best way to do it is to fly off of the hill when the wind is blowing up the hill TLittle. Then the slope lift will hold you up while you wait for the thermals!

Oh, yeah, slope lift is invisible, all right, particularly on a larger slope. One never knows until a model looks like it fell into a hole! Our slope is useable for about 3 miles across: some days lift can be 12' out and 100' high, other days it will be 500' out, and 1,000' high. Only when you get there do you find out what you have! We have gone out on days when the lift didn't begin until 300' out; it takes nerve to go looking for it, 'cuz it's a long walk to get the model back...

At least thermals give you some hints: small birds, bugs, waves in the grass, but slope those are not always visible or reliable...

HA! I think I finally figured out why guys like gliders so much. The "search for the invisable lift" is very addictive. Opps, thats thermal gliding, Carry on.

Wendell,
that looks like the dunes you introduced me to 20 or so years ago.We had a blast and I was hooked.Still looking for a good slope like that on this side of the straight.

How high are those sand dunes Wendell? It's tough to tell from the pictures.

Desperate to go slope flying

Just look at the 1 km walk I had, but it was worth it,
the wind was perfect...........
another close call, I need to pay more attention to flying while recording
