Re: Field Operations

Our City has very general noise guidelines. We aligned noise reduction with neighbor hours. We let the roosters waking them up, and have a chance to take coffee. EPF is noisy, and are electric. Not before 9am for sure.

Re: Field Operations

The issue here is noise, not electrics. There needs to be a general noise bylaw and you can have a requirement for lower noise levels before 9 am and after x pm.

Re: Field Operations

I'm secretary-treasurer at the Gatineau JAG club, and we had to convert our club to electric this year because of noise complaints by two neighbours of the farmer's field. The only exception is Nitro of .61 or less for existing members. Flight times for all is not before 9am, and further restrictions apply to fly Nitro. Sound tests are made in flight and on the ground at 3m full throttle and level cannot exceed 90db.

We are now faced with the city restricting use of the Agricultural zone field for RC flying. We may have to apply for an exception for use of this field, and will have to foot the bill of the evaluation.

Our regulations are on our site. You will also notice the flying times posted on the calendar. http://www.clubjagrc.com

I would recommend any club start thinking of rules or restrictions, teach people about noise reduction, prop ripping, mufflers etc. Unless you are in a desert somewhere or in the middle of the ocean. There is always someone who will complain if noise is continous. I know it would bug me if I was a neighbour.

Re: Field Operations

A few thoughts:

- I don't get the resentment. It's not like the there's anything preventing any members from getting an electric plane, if they want to fly earlier.

- Electric helis can be fairly loud (compared to electric fixed-wing), at least when doing aerobatics.

- Err on the side of caution.

I'm investigating changing the club field rules
There are no conditions attached to our license to use the property

It used to be an airstrip (DC3, Beaver, Norseman etc)

However there are neighbours we don't want to irritate

Re: Field Operations

we had a policy at one time where electrics were allowed to fly earlier than the glow planes. caused some resentment in the club, more than you'd expect to see.

You must have the 9am rule there now for a reason. There are other concerns in that case other than motor noise. people driving by or over property close to the field...noise from just having a good time etc etc....lots of things can upset already upset neighbours.

If the former, then you're stuck. If the latter, it may be negotiated. However, you can wind up with complaints about the "noisy" airplanes flying before 9AM" coming from the neighbours if you decide to allow it, plus how are you going to police this?

Easiest way to solve this is to say "This applies to all aircraft and it's for our neighbours' consideration."

Re: Field Operations

I would suggest that if there is a special rule for the electric flying befoer 9 that would be unfair.
How can you govern who has a sound checked electric or not and there is some small gassers that are pretty quiet or at least would be the same as a electric prop ripping.

If it were me I would stick with the rule and back it up with what happens when there is a complaint and you loose a field

Re: Field Operations

All the clubs in our area allow electrics before 9am. I could see EDFs and fast prop planes being a no-no because they rip the props or make more noise.

Yes, large electrics can be pretty noisy if propped wrong but I fly IMAC with a guy with a H9 104" Extra on electric and even at full throttle it is far quieter than any gasser or glow. In sound testing they're nowhere near the limits and this particular model does not rip the prop and has far better performance than my 111cc.

Re: Field Operations

This is one of those decisions that will never have a good ending. We deal with a db level at a specific dustance for the wet fuel guys and we still have the occasional complaint.

Based on some of our larger e-powered models (100 inch wingspans, 20 inch props, 2500W+) at 300 M out you can barely hear them. We never get noise complaints from them.

The comparison is night and day. But you guys will have to set a max noise level at a distance as a club bylaw.

Good luck.
