Re: anybody doing work on their spad

Hi Max, yeh, my croodspad is a tank. It weighs in at 43lbs. If I figured it right, the wing loading is 56.5 oz/ft. The wing is 90" by 19.5" chord. I know it's not really a SPAD, but the materials and design came from reading about spads. I got into RC about 3 years ago when I built a Radikal G20 helicopter. I'm not an rc airplane pilot yet, heheh. Flying a helicopter seems to be a lot easier. In the pictures, the original landing gear was made from aluminum. I doubled it up, but it still bent like a pretzel going over the rough ground I graded out with my skidsteer in a logging clear cut. I live way out in the woods, so this was the only place available. This winter I'll build some skiis for it. Then I'll have plenty of takeoff room. It was fun anyway. Tough little bird.

Wow Jim. That is one heck of a SPAD. Looks sturdy.

What's it weigh? Do you know the wing loading on that baby?

Re: anybody doing work on their spad

Hi Mike, I'm more a helicopter pilot, got a Radikal G20. But I thought I'd see if I could build a spad type plane. I got carried away with the build, kind of heavy. But it moves on the ground at least. Cracked it up once and replaced the landing gear with heavy metal. Had to rebuild the tail wheel. New prop. 22 x 8. I live out in the woods and the only place to fly it is off a clear cut in the woods. I've got 2 position flaps on it. The engine is from a stihl 031 chainsaw I"ve had for over 35 years. Runs good. Now winter is here and yeh, I've thought about building some skiis for it. The snow gets about 3 to 4 feet deep here in the U.P., and it gets real smooth. We also have a small lake about 1/2 mile from here that freezes up good. Here's a couple pictures of my plane. Jim

Go for the skis. Here is my 40cc giant SPAD stick.
Also for STOL why not try flaps.

Haven't seen much action on the spad thread. I built mine a couple years ago. with all kinds of other things to do, never got it flying yet. Almost got it off the ground this summer, but my strip is a logging road and wasn't long enough. Might try putting skiis on it this winter. snow gets deep here. Gonna put a kill switch on the magneto as the carb doesn't kill it when throttled down, use to. I'll get her in the air one of these days. Jim
