Try loosening the screw a few turns, then pinch the rubber drum and roll it between your thumb and fingers. It'll compress the drum enough that the old sleeve will come off, and a new one will slip on. Remember to snug up the screw before firing it up again lol

Re: Changing dremel sanding drums

I have several drums that I've used for years. I find if I roll the drum and sanding wheel on the table top pushing down with my hand, thumb , what ever the sanding drum comes off no problem. I then replace it with the new one. When I tighten the screw everything is working as it should. I've bought parts everywhere but use Dremel

I think I have found a solution to over tightning and losing the drum sanders!. I sometime ago bought a lock and release drum sander bit. This bit doesn't require any tightning as its slip on and push down to lock and pull up to release the drum....I started using it and I tell you, my drum is still going on strong.....Best $10 bucks I spent on a Dremel bit!

The nail file trick is a good idea. I use a small hose clamp, tighten the sh#t out of it, remove it quickly and put the new drum on quickly before it stretches back to full size. I have also had good luck putting a little dish soap on the drum before sliding it on. Once you tighten the screw down again, it won't slip.

Re: Changing dremel sanding drums

I find that if I run the sanding drums at a lower speed and not wide open they last most of there life, but turn the dremel wide open I can shred one pretty quick.... Add a small drop of CA to the joint will also give them a longer life and not shred at increased speed but come right off when spent...

Take one of the wife's finger nail files and spin up the drumal and hold the file to the rubber drum that will clean it up and the sanding drum should slide right on

Re: Changing dremel sanding drums

Hmm mm, I've having same issue for few days as I've lost few drums already as they rip apart very quickly and easily with being used much at all. I'll less tighten mine next time and see how they do.

Re: Changing dremel sanding drums

Yep I too suffer a bit when changing them. On the plus side there are so many sales on "dremel" bit sets that I have literally a dozen of the small and large rubber mandrels. I even bought a cosco set that came with the motor and bits for so cheap I gave away the dremel and kept the bits.....

Yup... I'd say that was the problem. Sanding drums slip off of mine easily and I use CT drums without an issue. I found tightening them too much caused them to burst as mentioned.

I think that's the reason exactly.
