Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? I have nicked several of my packs over the last year, and when I placed them in an steel ammo can for safety....Nothing. I had this happen to at least 5 batteries. BUT, last weekend, a fellow RC'er had his plane ready to fly (Charged Lipo) when we heard a "Pop" that came out of the fuselage. Before he could get the canopy off, smoke was coming from the fuse and in less than a minute, the plane was fully ablaze, the lipo blew fire about 3' out the side of the plane. Plane destroyed. Lipo destroyed. The only thing we could figure was he might have punctured the battery when he installed it into the plane. VERY SCARY!!!! |

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? I recently had my 450 inverted when I lost it and damaged a LiPo when it was ejected. It burst into flames and burnt with gusto. That was one cell of three. Then to be safe, I punched a nail through the other cells and they also burst into flames. This was a one-year old pack. AL |

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? From my understanding most of the manufacturers have modified the chemical makeup of lipos so that they should no longer flame up if any of the cell pouches are torn.... even when fully or near fully charged. Sorry guys I don't plan on trying this out on my good packs to prove a point. Not sure when they started this process or if all manufacturers do it but would have to presume most do. |

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? I believe that Keith Sparks has a webpage that deals with properly disposing of a lipo pack in a safe manner (rendering it inert). Next stop would be your local hazardous waste drop-off location and hand over the batteries. They'll also take the old nicds, nimhs, paint cans, model fuel, etc., etc. |

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? Lipos will not blow if they dont have energy stored. IE if they are dead they will not blow. If they are charged look out!!! |

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? I have tried to get a lipo to blow a few time, not just on a small one but big 6s 5000mah ones too. To make a long story short if you want to see smoke and stuff what I have found is that you either push it on charging (charge it as a 4s when its a 2s with high amps) or when fully charged short it out!! The lipo needs to be hot to be able to smoke and explode (hot enough to go into thermal run away. Once burning it prdces its own o2,hence the reason for sand to burry it) Just pudding a nail through it only shorts a small section of the plates inside. I have a bad battery here if someone would like to video tape. Oh and yes I do practice safety |

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? I tore a 3 cell Lipo apart a few weeks ago. Like Dave I just chucked it out on the gravel (no puncture). Syd the Lab hauled one of the cells over to the grass, found it a few days later. All cooked up, the other 2 cells never reacted. |

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke? I have a friend that did the same thing Dave with the same results. Maybe it was because the battery was not mounted in a model. Why don't you try another. Bill |
