Rob:
Excellent progress reports. I hope the plane is everything you want in an aircraft. Good luck!

Re: I was weak...

A few notes on bending aluminum that thick:
1. The bend radius should be at lest 3/8"
I us a piece of angle that has been radiusd in my 6" vice . Clamp the L/G in the vice and push the end with a gloved hand toward the radius. Use a soft face or dead blow hammer and strike it just above the vice.
2. Use 6061-T6 aluminum. It comes in flat bar in various thicknesses and widths. Look for a local shop that specializes in aluminum fabrication. Aircraft Spruce in Brampton will send you a piece.
3. If stress cracks appear on the outside of the bend, the radius is too small. Start over.

I guess it would help if I actually SHOWED the new ground clearance...

So – I had some spare time and I was able to work on my Four Star… I changed the LG. The bird definitely sits a tad Proud now… the nose is some two inches higher than original design… but the prop clearance is fantastic!

I took it to the field today and it all worked flawlessly!

No, Just replacing the existing LG.
It'll give me better clearance for the propeller and have less bounce on rough landings which is what I was looking for.

Re: I was weak...

OK Next round to the Landing Gear Saga...

I tried to go with Carbon Fiber but trying to get something to work just wasn't happening - between the price of the LG itself and the shipping - the cost was getting down right STUPID!

Plan 'B'
I went to a local Fabrication plant and bought 24" of 3/16" x 1.5" Aluminium Bar Stock (6061).

I measured up my existing LG , made the adjustments that 'I' wanted and put the Bar in my vice and started bending it...

Still to come - holes.
I'll need three to attach it to the plane and one on each leg for the wheels... I think that I'm up for the challenge.

Total cost of making my own Aluminium LG... $2.50.

What do you think so far?

I looked at that Dubro Landing gear - it looks great - unfortunately it is too small.

I think what I'm going to have to do is get on the phone to AMR and ask them to measure some of their CF Landing Gears to see what would fit and then I could 'Customize' my Four Star even more...

Something like this;

They aren't cheap! but they are cheaper than loosing props and bending a prop shaft.

Yup they are nice alright.. but pricey .. I have a set on this little shoulder wing .. got them at a cheap price so not to bad.. alot better than aluminum.. or uggggg wire.....
