Re: Principles of Acrobatic Slope Soaring

Hey Brent, you need to head over to Merv's on a day with a strong south wind, and get him to take you to the hill abover the gun club. It's a great slope for a glider like yours.

Wilf use that hot wire cutter to cut your self a slope wing no need for a whole "raft" of them, just add ballast when conditions dictate.
Pink Styrofoan and a hot wire built me a sloper in less than a week last summer (just working on it in the evenings too). Its not a wing like DHansen is talking about, it is a 'that looks about right scale' Schweizer 1-26. (See pics below) A simple flying wing (Zagi type thing) would be even quicker and easier to throw together.

No fear Wilf! We have been known to slope soar glow powered trainers out here too! Just take the prop off (reduce the drag) heave her into the wind & enjoy! Takes a little stiffer breeze though...
Merv would be talking about my old Kadet Seniorita for one. It worked out great until I botched the landing and broke it. Fixed'er up and used it as a Gentle Lady towplane the next day. I have also slope soared a Sig Wonder, didn't even take the prop off that one. Would've worked really well if I had remembered to turn on the receiver before throwing it off the hill.

It's my opinion that thermal ships are the perfect glider to learn slope soaring with Wilf. And yes they do have less wind penetration so you go out on a day with a gentle wind and learn the hill & the way the wind works on it. Just like you don't learn how to drive in a 1200 hp open wheel race car in an Indy 500 event!

We have sloped 2 channel 2 meter gliders out here in anything from a breeze so gentle we had to lick our fingers to determine wind direction to 30km/hr winds. You just trim them and fly them differently.

As DHansen says ideally you have a whole raft of different birds for all conditions but that depends on your finances, the time you have to invest and amount of storage room you can dedicate.

All kinds of slopes can be used for sloping if you have the luxury of tailoring a plane to suit it. I have seen videos if guys with specialty gliders sloping guard rails on overpasses, sand dunes in the desert, waves at the beach even a piece of cardboard in a gym!

So I guess that being said, there is no perfect hill, you just tailor your aircraft and flying style to what is available.

Re: Principles of Acrobatic Slope Soaring

I saw the ninja there. I googled it when I got home . It sparked my interest. but reading build tread on the net the guy spent 3 month's building It! The snow will be flying again by then LOL.
I have a cabin at Diefenbaker lake and there are some great hill's and cliff's by the lake with the prevailing wind bowing off the lake and they go on for miles.
Probably a radiant would be a good started except I just bought a used high wing trainer Sonic and a cpl glow engines and just finished building a hot wire cutter today.
My wife will kill me if I bring another plane home soon!

Re: Principles of Acrobatic Slope Soaring

To my knowledge Thermal ships lack in the penetration department! One glider I'm aware of (for sloping) would be the Ninja. Slope flying (which is a pretty general term) is more about location than plane. Kinda like takin' a knife to a gun fight, if you have the wrong plane for the location your at!

Mike has had one at your LHS for ever! I beleive they have a built in balast tube too.

Re: Principles of Acrobatic Slope Soaring

Hey all
I think perhaps I have some great spots for slope soaring at lake diefenbaker near elbow.
m lots of prevaling wind and some nice slopes and cliffs.
My question is what would make a good starter slope soaring plane.
Could you slope soar with a standard themal type glider?

Thanks for the video Thomas. Big air/slope is beautiful!

tips
Fly the model that that are suitable for the conditions you encounter. This is where experience and slope sense comes in. This may mean you may need more than one model design. kinda like golf clubs.
Most of my video show different conditions and slope not always big air or slopes

Here is one from the backside with has possible 10 deg and the wind was 10-15

Dan is right you have to choose and use the right model for the condition

Cheers
