Re: need good ignition shutoff

I have two identical engines. I have already changed one part at a time including:
ignition
ignition sensor
spark plug
complete fuel system including inside tank
ignition battery
ignition switch
used regular gas and high test
cleaned carb

The next step is to disasemble the engine to see the reed block and chech to see if the case is sealing good, and check the front seal.

Well, I'd rather deal with one that doesn't have to. Tex.

Glad you have narrowed down your problem, I wonder if it could be your engine ignition module? If you had another of the same type you could put it on and see if it helps. Sound like a good head scratcher for sure.

Re: need good ignition shutoff

Finally making progress. The problem lies in a engine loosing it's tuning. The engine must be developing an air leak or an internal carb problem. The vibration was causing the led on the opto to blink because of a bad connection at the light, not a bad opto causing the ignition to skip. The complete ignition system works fine after alot of testing. Now to find the skipping problem.

Sorry, I see you did fly with the battery direct to the ignition and the engine was flawless. Seems to me the kill is likely defective. Hopefully Jeff will make it right.

Re: need good ignition shutoff

I am a big fan of Jeff and Thunderbolt but I have become less of a fan of 42% products including opto-kills and also Blue Box products.

I did have a totally dead opto-kill about a year ago that I bought from Jeff, after discussion he promptly replaced it, even before the malfunctioning kill switch had reached him. Jeff is second to none in terms of looking after his customers.

If you follow the wiring diagrams and connect them properly then they should either work or not. I don't have any experience with the Thor product although the reviews on Flying Giants (use search function) are not great.

That being said, the owner of 42% was always responsive to my emails and did his best to help me with problems, but they just got to be too many and too worrisome so I have removed their products from my larger planes.

If you can bypass the opto-kill and get the engine to run well then that pretty much tells you that the kill or how you have it wired is the problem.

I now use Smart Fly kill switches in my large planes and have not had a problem. There are problems reported with all these products on US web sites but Smart Fly also has excellent support.
