2nd JR XP6102 MOD ready to test. I do not expect any problems, as all went smooth and it looks sharp with the new LED, Switch, and black SHC screws. Here are some pictures to show more detail on the MOD.

The V8HT 2.4 Ghz Transmitters are in at HobbyKing. Got my order in today. I hope I get it before the end of the month, with their New Year Holliday lasting 2 weeks, it may be a bit longer.
This also gave me a chance to order a HobbyKing 6 ch V2 RX, so I can make a wireless USB simulator adaptor for the computer to work with the TH9X Radio system. To top off the order I got myself one of the Bomb Drob Kits with servo release. I may put this on the JUG, P-47 Thunderbolt so I can interchange it with a Drop Tank.

Well we here in Southern Ontario have had some good weather for the 2nd week of January 2012. So I got in some more testing of the V8HT in the XP6102 outside with 5-6*C daytime high. In Range Test Mode I get full, no jitters, control, and a super fast rebind when I turn OFF and ON the transmitter.
I can't wait for HK to get some more TX's in stock, so I can convert my other XP6102. The next DIY MOD for me will be a Fly Sky 9X with a FrSky telemetry TX unit. Lots of YouTube video on how to do this one, but I will try to show a How To for a switchable dual 2.4 Ghz TX and back light LCD too.

I have resized some more pics of the FrSky 2.4 Ghz, DIY, MOD in the XP6102 and I will be upgrading my other XP6102 as soon as I can get a V8HT board in from HobbyKing. The big trick is to find the item IN STOCK and on sale when you want it.
The Resolution of 3072 for the V8HT is a funny number, 2^11=2048 and 2^12=4096, and 11 and a 1/2 bits makes no sence. This could be just a typo too.
I also had to resolder the LED on the PCB to get it to 90*, check yours for propper position.

The DPDT MODE switch is a bit tricky to solder. One of those 3rd hand things works well to hold the switch just above the radio.
Pull up the Power Switch PCB (3 screws 1 big) and untwist the + and PPM wires from the - neg wire. Rought the 2 wires under the Switch PCB on the other side of the Beeper and up to case top so they can be soldered to the Mode Switch. Slide on some 1/4" long 1/8 heat shrink tube and solder to center poles of the switch, with + close to the side where the FrSky TX board is located. With the front case upsidedown the FrSky wires go to the bottom of the switch Red to + side and signal to PPM side.
Solder a 4" white and a 4" red wire to the top 2 switch terminals Red +, and white to signal side. these 2 wires will go to the 72 Mhz PCB on the 1/2" wires on the connector, red to red and white to white. The - neg wire with the black marker on it goes up where it did before and reconnects to the spot it was cut from, with a 3/8" long 1/16" dia. heatshrink to insulate it.
Insert the switch in the hole with a nut and lock washer on the inside, and a flat washer and nut on the outside. This will make it so the switch is back for the back antenna (2.4) and forward for 72 Mhz.
I have a piece if 1/16" thick double sided foam tape under the FrSky board, but velcro will also work.
Bend excess wire as shown in picture, and secure.
I put 3/16" of 1/8" dia heatshrink on two 2-56x .375 screws and tapped two holes, for the screws. These hold back the FrSky PCB, and antenna wire, from getting too close to the gimbles or pot wires.
I also put hot glue on the 3 wires going off the RF board and on the open coils at the bottom of the RF board for stability. Some hot glue where the wire bends back beside the screw post, to keep it down.
One tie wrap went on the wires ontop of the FrSky's PCB. A drop of nail pollish on the top of the 5-56 nuts will heep them in place.
Fit the 2.4 Ghz antenna connector in, and the battery plug PCB, screw in the antennas and the case screws. Plug in the battery and Test it out.

The Radio, FrSky Mod Kit, 1 DPDT switch, two 2-56(x.5), two (x.375) screws (2 nuts, 2 fibre washers), some wire, and a bit of heatshrink tube, would be all there is to this project. The tools are; digital 6" Caliper, drill and #bits upto 1/4", soldering iron + solder, wire cutters and strippers, some hot glue and a gun, plyers, and screw drivers.

When I opened my JR XP6102 there was some yellow specks of dust on the back and botton inside the case. I found this to be solder flux that had fallen off the PCB. Most electronics has this resin cleaned off to pervent problems later. JR needs a lesson on QC.

Check to see that all things in the radio are ok and secure. Get a rough idea of where things are to go and the order of assembly. Measure twice and drill once.
After the battery is unpluged, the back is removed (6 screws), and the power plug PCB can be removed ( 1 screw). Set back aside for now. Unscrew the antenna and set it aside too.
I started with the bind switch and power LED board. Setting it on center between the JR logo and the sound vent. It worked well with socket head cap screws, to clear the vent sides. All holes are marked and drilled with a 1/16" (#52) bit to check location. The LED is a 3mm (#33) hole and the pushbutton switch is 3.5mm (#29).The screw holes are clearance for #2-56 (#47) or 2.15mm.
I cut all 3 wires 1/2" up going to the RF PCB, after marking the - (neg) wire with a black permenant marker. I would resolder the - (neg) wire back to the same spot, but for now it would get the PCB out of the way. Take off the RF BCP. (4 screws)(just loosen bottom 2)(antenna wire still attached)
Take care not to short out the Memory Battery on the top side of the Power Switch PCB.
I drilled both the 2.4 Ghz Antenna hole and Mode switch hole with (#1) drill. Make sure to predrill with a 1/16" or ~ (#52) bit. Switch hole size may vary. The antenna is as close to the back so it still points up, and the switch is 5.5mm or 0.215" oc to the edge of the 72 Mhz antenna hub, or to suit your switch for internal clearance.

Yah, I've been looking at these. I might put one into my Multiplex EVO.

Have heard only strong positive reviews so far, even by the fellas with spectrum analyzers..

Price is excellent too.

Nice Mod! I have been using the FrSky module in my 9C and I have had absolutely no problems. Would definitely like to see the details of your backlight install if you end up doing it.

FrSky 2.4 DIY MOD in JR XP6102 Dual Band

Well here it is.......Dual 6102.......
This DIY 2.4 Ghz MOD went well, and it gave my old JR XP6102 a new life. The FrSky 8 channel, V8HT, is a ACCST, (Advanced, Continuous, Channel, Shifting, Technology), with a fast rebind and RX Failsafe System.
Though the XP6102 is only a 6 channel TX, it is a solid 72 mHz radio with 10 model memories, and a good LCD display, with lots of extra space inside. I have 2 of these JR units and like the feel and dependability. The Spektrum and JR; DSMX, and DSM2 are ok, but not the best. I looked at 5 other 2.4 Mod Systems and found the FrSky to be the best one to use, because of 3 areas; Failsafe, Rebind Time, and Price of a wide product range.
I tried to do the MOD with as little change to the TX as possible. So if in a few years there is a better MOD, I do not have a problem with extra holes. I may also backlight this radio, so I kept things away from the CPU and Display area. I got some nice macro pictures of the modifications, and will try to discribe all the steps to make the job easy.
