Re: Semi scale Mig-25 Foxbat, 70 mm

Thanks John, that is really helpful. I was planning to build an Avro Arrow similar to yours but would also like to design and build a F-101 Voodoo. I was first thinking of making a full balsa build like a He-162 I did but your method of building with pink foam seems very appropriate and I would like to give it a try. All I need now is to make myself a hot wire and it's a go...

Hi Alain,

I use 3/4 oz fibreglass cloth, I buy it bulk at Composites Canada, it’s not very expensive. But, you can get it at any fibreglass supplier.

I also use 1.5 oz fibreglass cloth as live hinge material. If you spread it out smoothly, just spray it lightly with some hair spray. This will keep the threads together when you cut it into strips, I general cut the hinge strips 1.25” wide so there is 5/8” attached to the control surface and the trailing edge.

To bond the fibreglass cloth to foam, I use Flecto Diamond Coat water based urethane. Be sure you get the water based version of the produce, not the thinners based, otherwise, it’ll dissolve the foam. I use it to attach the hinge strips and the overall covering of the airframe. It’ll take at least three coats with a light sanding in between coats to fill the weave and get a very smooth finish. I use a 1” sash brush to apply the urethane.

To paint the model, I use latex paints from Home Depot. You can buy their sampler bottle for around $5.00 it’s enough to paint several models, good value. I also spray on the paints mostly, provides a lighter in weight finish. I sometimes spray on latex primer to help with adhesion. You must thin the paint of course as it is too thick in consistency for spraying. But, it you don’t have a sprayer, you can brush it on, just thin it down with water to retard the drying time so the brush marks will blend or flow. The Mig-25 was simply painted with a 1” sash brush, there are no brush marks at all.

Hi John, I really enjoy your builds and it inspire me to try to design my own foam EDF planes. One thing I would like to know, you mention that you use fiberglass and urethane for the finish. Would you mind to specify which products you're using and also what type of paint. Thanks

Field is located in King City on a local farm that raises chickens, and the owner is within his rights to limit what is beng flown.

Plus we had some members who were flying over-powered Habu's and not keeping within the actual field limits; so.... owner got fed up and ended the fun for the EDF guys. Most of the club seems to be prop-based fliers and the rent is cheap. If i really get the EDF bug, there's Squadron 905 and Humber Valley as the closest clubs.

Did come across a pusher version of a RF-4E Phantom that looks interesting. Not sure is can be modified to a Mig-25 or Avro Arrow. Right now, the plans are in German which makes reading interesting as my knowledge of German is "scheisse". Downside of the Phantom plans is that it's from Depron.

Here's the details from the PDF topview of the plans:
RF-4E Phantom
Konstruktion: Olaf Haack 2013
Spannweite:.... ca 740mm
Länge:............. ca 1035mm
Fluggewicht..... ca 550 g
Motor............... 2826 Outrunner -140 Watt
mit ca. 1.400 U/V
Servos............. 2x Querruder 7,5 g
1x Höhenruder 10 g
Luftschraube... 8x6E bis 8x7E
Regler............. 20 bis 30A BEC-Flugregler
Lipo................. 3S / 1.300mAh
Ruderausschläge. Quer +/- 15mm (innen)
Höhe +/- 25mm (innen)
Schwerpunkt... 170 - 185 mm ab Vorderkante Tragfläche (innen)

Sat down and looked things over, and figured out that the mtor and the battery being used are compatible with what I have in the workshop for the other Depron planes on the bench.

Re: Semi scale Mig-25 Foxbat, 70 mm

No EDF rule??? That’s pretty cruel. Well, the original foam version of my Avro Arrow wasn’t EDF, it was a pusher prop powered model. And of course, I “Tim Allen” it

I put in a Mega EDF motor, meant for a mild 90 mm EDF, a 9” APC prop and a 5000 mah battery. The plane sounded like a Stryker on steroids and it had unlimited vertical climb to boot. So, if you want to fly a jet, you do have options just be very very very aware of that nasty sharp prop if hand launching.

Re: Semi scale Mig-25 Foxbat, 70 mm

Just got bak n RCC after a one-year hiatus (way too much reading of Fan Fiction DOT NET and the only times that I go downstairs into the basement if for laundry, freezer and bathroom supplies.

Keep tripping over the sheet of half-inch foam sheet, and wondering Arrow or MIG or ... and realizing that the club that I belong to has a no EDF rule).

Yes, Max, 905 Squadron..... got to get my trainer flying and brush up on my skills.

I like it, John. I think it looks nicer in that livery.

My thoughts exactly, What is happening in Ukraine is appalling.
I am constructing a Sukhoi SU 37 super Flanker. A Steve Shumate design using twin vectoring motors.

It will be finished in Ukrainian colours.
