Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread

Out for a few more flights yesterday. I tried the flaps at 15º both at altitude and for landing. They do slow things down and at the speed I deploy them the ballooning effect is minimal; I don't think there's any need to mix in down elevator.

This time no cowl screws came loose... but two cowl mounts DID break off and two more were loose. I think I found the reason - contact between the muffler and cowl. Note the marks cause by the aluminum rubbing:

A relief cutout should solve that:

With a little epoxy around the edges to seal it up.

I am reattaching the mounts and I hope that this solves the problem.

Thanks! I'm very pleased with the plane and yes, we are lucky to have such a nice field with some dedicated folks to take care of it.

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread

My buddy took a lot of good pictures. Here are my favourites.

Assembly time

Flap test (though I didn't use them this flight)

Getting the benefit of a second set of eyes

Striking a pose

Off we go

An experienced spotter / trimmer is a great help. Note the look of terror on my face.

Overhead pass

Point of touchdown

Taxi back

Congrats! Always nice to hear of a successful maiden flight after all of the effort you put into the build.

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread

The maiden went very well. A single flight between the raindrops with a steady, gentle wind blowing straight down the runway. Greased landing to a smattering of applause. I must be getting used to this because I remembered to breathe and my knees didn't even knock that much. Thanks to a few fellow club members for their support.

Some minor issues (all will be fixed by our club's June 4th event):
- Idle is too high
- TX timer wasn't working (flight time est. 5 min)
- A couple of cowl screws were missing and more were loose
- A bolt in the nose gear oleo was missing its nut

Some observations:
- The only trim needed was 4 clicks of down elevator
- The DLE 30 is more than enough power
- A very gentle and scale-like flyer

One of my buddies took some photos... I should have them within a day or two.

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread

It's been a while since I updated this thread. I was planning to maiden the plane a couple of weeks ago at a club in Orillia ON but the trip was cancelled due to weather. This is not only RC season for me but RV season for the three of us so it's a busy time, but I did manage to get the plane into the back yard and started yesterday.

Assembled and checked (I left the wing struts off for the run-up)

Fueled and restrained.

Running, though just long enough to check the tune (good on the ground, at least) and set up a throttle curve.

Packed and ready - I'm heading to the field after work for the maiden.
