Re: HobbyKing 90mm F-16 duct opening

Some were asking about the cheater hole mod. Here's a shot of the dremeled opening.
Without these the plane will not perform as the fan is starved for air.
Cheers

Re: HobbyKing 90mm F-16

I finally got a spinner nut adapter to run the stock fan. Performance is better than the changesun type mentioned in the last post. Found the rolling tendency during pullouts caused by the wheel collar style set screws not having flat ends. Once filed flat, no more twisting of the stabilizers. I would still recommend putting in stronger servos.
Lastly, my first 90mm F-16 is now history. The aircraft suddenly rolled inverted during a high speed dive giving no time to recover. A leading edge flap parted company. I think the wire linkage flexed at speed then the hinges tore out of the wing. Next time I'll put carbonfiber tubing over those linkages as well as the elevator linkages. I would recommend adding extra hinges on the LE flaps as well. It has been a steep learning curve but I think they can be made reasonably reliable.

Re: HobbyKing 90mm F-16

Sorry,
He's already busy on the next EDF!

I ended up replacing the stock Starmax fan and shroud with the HK unit

It is a good thing as my original shroud was cracked in 4 places. The HK unit is better but still weak where the motor screws on. The fan must be balanced as it is off. Using the HK balancer was frustrating as the centering cones are not true!

I had the pointy HK fan retaining spinner/nut come off on the last flight. Again my son was flying and had to deadstick it in. The nose snapped off and the belly strakes tore off but it is repaired for the next mission using epoxy, DAP Fast' Final lightweight filler and craft paint (almost a perfect match). I JB weld glued the motor into the housing no make sure it doesn't come loose. The spinner was lost so I used locktite on another nut from the starmax unit.
Power is close to the original 2Kg thrust around 1500watts versus 2.2 and 1700watts. It is quieter and should give better flight times. I'm now timing 5 1/2 minutes then it's time to land.
Can't wait to fly it again!
Cheers

Re: HobbyKing 90mm F-16

That cockpit looks great Eric- kudos to your dad!
I had a dead-stick with my Sabre recently with early LVC the result of a bad cell in a new 6s 4000 Rhino battery. Fortunately it happened in a good part of the sky for a safe landing and the cell only puffed, not burnt like yours. Glad your son was able to save it- between him and your dad you've got a good team going there

Some shots of the burnt battery and newly completed cockpit. My father was nice enough to build up the cockpit using bits of blue foam, aluminum tubing, plastic and paint (4 days work)! The instrument panel was sourced from google images and sized to fit by my son.
Cheers Eric

Nice photos Eric. This plane really has presence in the air. Glad your son was able to save her.

Come on Ottawa!!

Re: HobbyKing 90mm F-16

Almost lost it due to a bum cell on the last flight. One cell from the 'force control' 4800mah 6S 30C battery burned up in flight! Loss of thrust forced my 13 year old son to make an amazing downwind emergency landing. Thankfully the damage was minimal. The foam under the battery melted almost through. A little 'dollarama' 5 min epoxy fixed everything. That battery was noticably weaker than the other 2 of the same brand.
It was 'trying to tell me something' on earlier flights but I missed the clues...
Cheers Eric

PS With the rear 'cheater holes' dremeled open, the jet really performs well (with a good battery)!

Re: HobbyKing 90mm F-16

Some pics from yesterday.
Flew again today and had better thrust having opened up the aft cheater holes slightly. Will open up more in the future as I think the fan is starving for air. One aileron servo is starting to fail as it doesn't center the same every time. The landing gear is functioning well now that it has beefed up servo arms.
Takeoff and landings are nice and short with full flaps. I comes in fairly nose high with some thrust on for landing.
I think Hobbyking and Starmax have another winner!
Cheers

Re: HobbyKing 90mm F-16

One question for anyone...
My fan blades were worn prematurely during the first bench testing. The fan shroud was not supported and wore the blades more than 1/16" as it flexed.
Do you think I'll get much more thrust by getting a tighter fitting fan? It's pulling 1800watts with a fully charged 6S battery now. Would it be higher with a tight fan?
Thanks Eric
