Re: Vinyl Graphics Cutters

Jimmy,

I have a couple 24" "imported" cutters - A simple stepper motor version at home and a better quality servo motor variety at work. I have used a program called Vinylmaster since starting at this and it works very well for what I do. 24" is a good size as when doing paint masks anything over 24" is hard to handle and wastes a lot of material typically. have done very big layouts in pieces. The cutters and software are "reasonable" cost if you use them a bit. When I get a chance I will take a few screen shots to show what the software can do.

We are still around but are now called the Prince Albert Radio Control Club. We changed the name when we built a car track to try and pull in a few more members. Some of us are still around from 86 but not many - I started about 84 I think, and I think I might remember you here.. That ball cap with the Gooney Bird is a classic!!!

Chris,

So what industrial cutter do you have and what software? Guessing it's closer to something like Auto-CAD.

Spent 4 months in PA back in 1986 working at SASK PEN. Great bunch of guys at the PA Aeromodellers. Use to hang out at the local Hobby Store, at the field on weekends and even attended club meetings. Think I still even have a ball cap from the club. LOL!

There is lot of power in the Trace feature as most good qaulity pictures can be traced and then cut.

For thin materials such as ultra cote or Monokote you have to use a cutting mat which is available from Amazon. You must remove the backing and place it on a cutting mat. It is slightly sticky and holds the material in place while the cut is being done. Also when doing the design you must select the cutting mat in the design window. The machine will change it’s cut depth to allow for the mat. Hope that helps.

Yep a forum would be great.
I tried to start a Forum but we can't save Cameo Files to it on RCC. I guess we could start a forum but then you would always have to request the poster to send you the design in email but then that becomes very labor intensive and time consuming rather then just be able to download the file from here.

Just got my cameo 4 and just starting to learn how to use it. I did a test cut and it cut Ultracote just fine, but too much pressure as it cut the backing as well. Need to keep playing with settings.

Yep the cameo software is pretty good. Especially like the Trace function. You can import a .jpg and with the trace function it will make a cut able design. There is some shortcomings with that function but once you figure it out it is very powerful. My cameo 4 has 15 in bed which also gives bigger cutting area.

Re: Vinyl Graphics Cutters

I bought a Cricut Explore Air2, since my daughter has one, and the projects that she has completed with it are pretty amazing. I think that the Cameo may be more a more popular machine, but I'm not sure of that. Just based on the machines alone, I think that the Cricut feels more substantial when you pick it up and compare the components of the machine. (What you can see anyway) The Cricut Maker is much more capable than the Explore Air2. I have seen one cut wood and leather, it is pretty amazing. For the money, I don't think that you can beat it. However, you are still limited to a 12x24 mat size. From all accounts, the Silouette software is easier to use, but I don't have any first hand experience.

What is more difficult, and I have only had limited success, is to create something is Autocad, save as a dxf and load directly into the cutter software. So far, no luck with this. I have managed to save my CAD drawings as a PDF, open it with Inkspace and save as an SVG, but so far it is creating hundreds of points that all need to be plotted. Moderately successful at best. That said, I am using CAD software that is okay, but not like the real Autodesk Autocad software. I am new to Inkspace, so far, I would have to say that it is hard to figure out, but I'll keep trying.

Sorry to go off topic there.

Re: Vinyl Graphics Cutters

Cameo 4 also cuts balsa, doesn't do it well. The blade for cutting wood is over $100

Re: Vinyl Graphics Cutters

Hmm. this hasn't been updated for awhile. Wondering if everybody is still recommending the Silhouette Cameo or is anybody playing with a Cricut Maker?

I rather like that the Cricut will cut basswood and appears will cut balsa.
