Great. Now all we need is good weather to go flying again.

Re: 12V SLA Starter Box Battery

Thanks guys. So I just ended up using a 3S LiPo with a low voltage alarm on it when it. Got tired of wasting my money on SLA. Bonus is it provides more AMPS to turn my starter versus SLA. Win Win!

Re: 12V SLA Starter Box Battery

Where are you keeping your flight box? is the top of the battery contaminated with fuel and dust? Anywhere near concrete? Do you store it near NiCad packs?

Have you confirmed the output drops to float? The fact that charger is common to what you post as multiple failed batteries would lead me to at least test it is performing to spec.

Also, what is the battery sourcing, (ie, starters, etc.)? These were really not designed for high current draw and if you constantly use them for that they can heat up internally.

Having said that, most failures I have seen is the result of the battery shorting internally from plate flaking. This will usually produce a bulge and/or crack in the case adjacent to that location.

NOTE: The reason I asked earlier regarding NiCads relates to something we needed to address working in the bush. Our helis had both standard lead acid and NiCad. We removed them every night to heated storage, (-55F in the morning) and ABSOLUTELY had to separate the two chemistries. If set close together for any length of time they were likely chemically inert by morning and non-recoverable. Cannot remember the reason.

Re: 12V SLA Starter Box Battery

Thank you. But the charger i use is a powerstream url: http://www.powerstream.com/SLA-12V07.htm which is designed to stay plugged in. I also disconnect it everyday when I am done so it is never connected as once, I too, experience the panel taking small current.

You keep it on a charger constantly? I don't know if I would recommend doing that, might be the problem too. Also, if it's sitting unused, either disconnect from your power panel or put a switch on it. I found out my power panel has a small constant current flow that brings the battery down enough after a week that I can turn over my engine anymore. I put a switch on it and now it sits for a week without issue.

12V SLA Starter Box Battery

I keep having to buy new 12V SLA Battery for my starter box every season even though I keep it on charge using a Powerstream SLA approved charger. Any ideas why?
