Re: Is CA and CA Accelerator Dangerous?

I used to mix Baking Soda and water and use this solution as an accelerator. I sprayed it on the cyano after it was applied in a fine mist. It worked "ok" and was a heck of a lot cheaper than the over the counter kind. I am not a chemist but I would think that this simple solution would be fairly safe to use. . . Cheers

Good Luck!
How is this done...do you mist the 2 sides before applying the CA? This could be very handy...especially for little repairs in the field.

Ace,

Do you have any issues with the dust created when sanding?

Here are a couple of msds sheets for two 3M products. Maybe not exactly what you are using, but will likely be quite similar.

Good luck with this. Someone mentioned Chris and Ontario Adhesives. Definitely worth a look...http://www.ontarioadhesives.ca/

Since I have had two previous reactions (flu-like symptoms for a day or two) and recently the serious bout of vomiting and headache (like a migraine the Dr. said) for over a week, I as starting to be convinced that the accelerator is the issue. I have used CA without the accelerator for some time with no ill effects. Its not easy trying to be a detective on this, but it looks like I will have to go back to the old way of building with pins, elastic bands, clamps and water based resin glues.

That's really to bad since I loved the quick building pace with CA glues.

However, its not worth the risk of using accelerator and I can still use CA in some applications and remember to wash frequently during and after every building session.

Good building everyone and thanks again.

I alway's use a north half mask respirator with the 2 cartridges for vapors.Make sure you have good ventilation.Goggles will help to keep fumes from contacting the eyes.

Re: Is CA and CA Accelerator Dangerous?

A member of our club has a sever reaction to CA exposure. All his planes are built the old fashioned way. Carpenters glue and pins. Come to think of it, that is the way I built all my planes until the late 90's. If you cant use CA anymore, its not the end of the world, it will just take a tad longer in the construction stage....

Yes it is definitely a health hazard.
Thanks Ken...you're right, just because there's no symbol doesn't mean that it may not have warning...thanks for the correction.

Re: Is CA and CA Accelerator Dangerous?

I'm fine with CA unless I use to much and it "flashes" and creates teh smoke and gives me the watery eyes. The Accelerator if I'm using it a lot I have some asthma issues.

There are many people who can't use regular CA but can use the "foam friendly odorless" CA's, There must be something significantly different in it's chemical composition that allows them to use it without allergy problems.

You have to be careful with it even with a mask as it can be absorbed through skin and fumes can absorb through eyes as well. Use a fan that is up against a window sucking the fumes out the window. As was mentioned, just blowing it around in a room won't help.
