Re: Info.

Ron Roy is on holidays, be back next week. He's going to help me install them, and I'll put on pictures after they are installed.

Re: Info.

Thanks Jan for the info. Yes I agree, It would be nice to see gliders flying in the North. I'd travel to see that. Al

Re: Info.

It would be best to add spoiler to elevator mix on your radio if you have that option. This way the plane stays in a level or slightly nose down attitude so you can concentrate on landing. Trim your motor to turn slowly on landing helps, it creates more drag than pull at low rpm. 10x6 @ 10,000rpm =60mph, 10x6 @ 1000rpm =6mph, slower than your flying speed.

We need a Northern Ontario soaring event, would be a blast.

Re: Info.

Thanks Welwood, I can't wait till spring and give them a try. I received my servos to-day and when Ron gets back we are going to install them. I will take some pictures of the instalation and post them. Al

Re: Info.

In my experience... spoilers kill the lift on the wing and result in a "pitching down" of the aircraft. The new glide angle is managed with up-elevator control, flaring up about 2 feet off the ground during landing. As the effective wing loading is increased with spoilers, this can help with landing during windy and turbulent conditions.

On a RES airplane like the Radian, spoilers really help with landing accuracy and therefore their installation is a good thing. On more "advanced" airframes, glidepath control is achieved through the use of ailerons and flaps. Downward deployment of ailerons/flaps most often requires a "down elevator" compensation to maintain glidepath.

The actual amount of elevator compensation required is acquired through many flights worth of experience and is somewhat dependant on the conditions of the day. To some degree, this is what R/C soaring is all about.

Re: Info.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll just have to wait and try them. I have two and putting them on only one with the help of my freind Ron Roy. I can only land one direction with know trouble, nice long runway, but if breeze is not out of the west I can't fly. So if I have spoilers I can fly more. Thanks Ron, I am still waiting for the servos. I can't beleive it. Almost 4 months to get the spoilers, now almost 3 weeks to get the servos. They put them in the mail from Edmonton last Friday. Hope they show up to-day or before you come back. HAHA. Talk to you later. Al

Here is with spoilers, but you can hover the same way without them, especially with little wind.

Re: Info.

On the only glider I had spoilers on I had to dial in a bit down to keep it flying. It is not violent but definitely different then flaps, flaps balloon, spoilers kill lift, so it kind of stops flying and goes down flat but steep. All depends on plane , size, position.... Go up 3 mistakes high and pop them and see what happens and what you have to do to control descent and angle. Ultimately, I personally did not like them. Learned to land without artificial help, less complicated, lighter too, just takes time and with Radian it's just fun.
