Re: Sailboat recomendations

Well fellows I followed this thread long enough and went and found my old sailing boat, all beat up from storage. It is a Dumas Huson 36 with the sail winch and the sail winch still works. The radio is dead, I will replace it with a 2.4. The paint job is cracking up but it adds to the age of the lady! I am afraid to dig out the mast as it may need to be replaced as a unit. I can remember the 50 lb. lines snapping, but can't remember what I replaced them with, I know it was Dacron. So with no grass to cut and very little snow. I hope to go sailing this spring after the wind blows winter away. Thanks fellows, you may have brought some more enjoyment into my life. The best to all!

Nice looking boat, Mike. Hope you have no problem with that 6' draft. There seems to be a few people that come into the harbour I live alongside (last decent one east of St Margaret's Bay), that have a little problem with the shoals (even though they are marked like crazy with buoys).

I've got an older style 26' Cape Islander with a 4' draft. The newer ones don't draw much more than 2".

I got the futaba S3802. The
Hitec servos were huge and would have taken a lot of modifying to fit in the hull.

I'm going through Edmonton this morning so will see what I can find. Thanks David!

Here is what the okanagan guy says:
"Either the Futaba S3802 sail servo or a HiTec HS-645MG sail servo will work well for you and will do a decent job controlling the sails even in quite difficult conditions. Note that the sail servo shaft is quite well centered side-to-side in the radio/servo box. The Futaba S3802 servo is somewhat heavier (17 grams heavier) and and is also stronger than the HiTEC HS-645MG."

Yes David, I found the problem there. I missed a knot in the luft lines that allowed it to slip and made it so that all the slack would go to either one sail or the other.

The problem now is that in a harder blow the wind over powers the sail servo and the sails go to full open and can't be brought back. I have an HS 425BB in there and with the long sero arm supplied in the kit it becomes very weak indead!

Hobby Wholesale has a HS 785HB which has a drum on it instead of a long arm and is 3.5 turns stop to stop. I am learning that this type of servo takes a completely different rigging set up so that the line stays tight at all times. Like the spool on the stearing wheel shaft of a motor boat.

I am not sure if this boat can be rigged that way. I will review that link you sent me earlier on Victoria upgrades.

Merv

P.S. There doesn't seem to be many sail boat folks on RCC. I'm seeing more on RC Groups.

Re: Sailboat recomendations

Jeez... um I mean ARRRR matee I have been missing a lot of posts on this thread.

The line should stay untangled as long as you wait untill the turn is made and the wind tightens up the line to the point where the sail is in the same position on the opposite side of the boat.ie Make the turn with rudder let the sail fill with air and then adjust sail as needed. I think the line should stay tight enough around the drum under the deck to not cause a problem.
This is pondering from a new sailer of course, never seen a drum in real life.

Ps What servo do you have pulling the sail lines?

Re: Sailboat recomendations

I made another attempt at sailing last weekend, a decent bit of wind this time, and I learned something more. Inspite of what the instructions say a standard servo does NOT work for the sail winch. Not anywhere close to enough torque!

So Hobby Wholesale has a drum style sail winch. How does that work, as in, how do you keep the line from falling off the drum when changing tack and the line goes slack as you cross over the wind?
