Sorry about the double post, It has been a while. Also at my age there may be a bit of oldtimers beginning to rear its ugly head, But, thinking about it, the wing was straight so it must have been the Spit. I do remember thinking to myself there would be a $1500 bill with all that stuff.

Re: Ordering online vs locally

I have mixed feelings about this subject. I am certainly in favor of supporting the local economy and the local hobby store. The down side is if the LHS does not carry the item I need or is out of stock.. They will willingly order it in for you but then it would take just as long if I had ordered it myself online and it would come directly to my door and I would not have to got to the LHS again to pick it up. Another benefit of the LHS is if the person you are dealing with is knowledgeable in the hobby, his advice can be invaluable. The after sales support can be invaluable, more than the saving you may get for shopping on line. On the other hand, if the you are dealing with a low paid hired help that just wants to make a sale or wants to look like the local guru on all things you might get a load of BS. I had an occasion to be waiting to be served, while a father and son were purchasing their first plane. The youngster wanted a scale plane and the clerk was trying to sell them a .60 sized Spitfire "a good flying plane". Yeah but in no way a trainer or first plane. Also on the counter and being pushed was a $900 radio set and a .90 size Saito. The guy must have been on commission. I couldn't stand by an let this go on, so when the clerk went to get something I quietly took the father aside and told him the clerk was ripping him off and put the purchase off until I had a talk with him. He is now a member of our club with a trainer bought from one of our graduated flyers, a used 6 chan radio, training cord compatible, And very happy. Trouble is it is hard for a a newbe to determine if the advice given is BS or not until he is a little more conversant in the hobby. I do still deal with that hobby store but I avoid any attendant that I don't know for any advice. By the way, I did speak with the owner of the shop about the incident and that clerk is no longer at the counter, or even still employed there.

Re: Ordering online vs locally

Another aspect of buying on line that one must consider is, if the part/item is damaged, broken or not serviceable. the correction of the problem can be costly to correct from the shipping aspect, especially from overseas. If the item is not serviceable, be prepared to eat the problem because the cost of correcting the mistake/damage can far exceed the cost of a new item locally (and take months).

Re: Ordering online vs locally

I have mixed feelings about the decision of buying from the local hobby store vs on line. I am aware of the benefits of having a LHS such as getting the part right now vs waiting for the shipment. The problem arises when the part is not stocked or is out of stock. I do often call and ask if the item is available or not. The other advantage is if the attendants at the store are knowegable in the hobby, one can get excellent advice when needed. The down side (and I have run into this occasionally) is the hired help that can string a load of BS to make a sale or to make themselves seem an expert and give terrible advice. I once stood by while a clerk tried to sell a father/son pair asking about a first plane and what they should fly, being persuaded towards a .60 sized Corsair as "easy to fly, A great air plane". I know I was looked at as a traitor when, while the sales guy was away for a bit I quietly told the father that the salesman full of BS and the plane was a terrible choice that would last only a few moments on the first flight. The pair has since bought a trainer from one of our club members and is now a club member and learning to fly with the help of an instructor. A very happy pair.

Re: Ordering online vs locally

I agree with you, for $8.50 it's worth it (used to be $5) but sometimes company's in the USA will only ship UPS especially if it's a larger item. If that's the case then Ron J. from Ottawa could have saved $92 - taxes of $15 so $77 plus have the enjoyment of feeling like he screwed UPS instead of the other way around.

$77 in brokerage fees for an item valued at $126 total should be against the law.

Re: Ordering online vs locally

Hmm I have not bought a great deal from the US over the years but have had great results from people who shipped to me using usps and $hitty results from those that shipped to me using UPS. Mostly under $100 dollars. only one purchase over $2000 but I imported that myself. For $8.50 it would not be worth my time to go to Canada customs and UPS store. This is just my experience. I have no issues with what you are suggesting To each his own! I have mostly bought directly from china. Cheaper shipping and about the same speed as from most American sites.
I have found the fastest shipping here in Canada but the prices not near so good.

Not hard if it's under $20 or the guy your buying from misrepresents the cost of the item or ships it as a gift.
Sounds like you have not bought a lot of items from down south if you have not run into CPC brokerage fee and taxes.

Never had to pay tax on something shipped USPS, tells me right there you have no experience ordering from the USA.

Honestly you think everything you order and ship USPS from the USA will come to your door tax free. Good luck with that.

Besides my comments were for Ron J. who clearly would have taken the time to drive downtown to clear his own package, even in Saskatoon.
