Re: Flight trimming my edge 540

Thanks to all who replied. Have started to flight trim now. One change at a time, see how it affects the flights.

Cheers

Neutral trim here too. I like it also to stay where you point it, doesn't matter the flight speed, as well as good 3Ding.

Re: Flight trimming my edge 540

If you think about it when in knife edge your elevator is neutral to when you are flying level. So if you are tail heavy you need to add in down trim to get the plane to not climb while flying level. When you go into knife edge flight your down trim on your elevator (to keep it from climbing while flying level) will now make it pull to the gear. I like this way of finding CG better then the inverted 45 degree climb.

I've tried my CG all over and yes having it way back does help it in hovering but seems to affect all the other aspects of 3D flight negatively. I like my Yak neutral and have found with a little practice the hovering comes quite easily.

PS Pay attention to the lateral balance as well!!!!

Here's a good read on all aspects of setting up a plane.

When in knife edge, the plane tucks in towards the gear, requiers a good amount of up elevator to keep straight. What causes this and how does a person fix??
As well when rolled to inverted, plane has a tendancy to climb.
Is this a thrust issue?? Woild some upthrust correct this??

Any help would be great

Thanks

Hey Derrick, for sure you should read Goldsmith's diatribe on trimming. First thing to get right is cg and you are definitely tail heavy. On your 45 upline and roll to inverted the plane should gently start to arc down or while horizontal and inverted you want some down elevator input to hold the line, unless yes you want to fly 3D and for this it should be balanced while inverted or even slightly up elevator for straight line.
For knife edge mixes I just use rudder on level flight and mix in whatever elevator and aileron you need to keep the turn flat. This mix is always on and will fix the knife edge .
Hopefully you will try some IMAC. The Edge is a good starter plane and in fact I first flew IMAC with a Hanger 9 Edge 540 and a ZDZ 40. Good luck!

What your describing, one would say its tail heavy.

Hey Derrick, give this link a read. Tons of good info. It's a long, slow process, but you will have an excellent flying aircraft when your done.
