That's what I did when the quad was out of view. Unfortunately, the camera didn't catch it

Re: Gaui 500X with GU-INS Build

I reinstalled the props, and decided to hover indoors (without GPS module installed – very important when flying this indoors).

I slowly throttled up, and played with the sticks for proper movement, and gained confidence enough to go to 50% throttle, just before lift-off. Everything looked good.

Here is the result.

Re: Gaui 500X with GU-INS Build

I used an Orange 6CH DSM2 compatible receiver for my first test. Just couldn’t wait to get my 7CH receiver. The 7th channel is used for the camera mount pitch axis.

After connecting the wires from the GU-INS to the receiver, I removed the props for safety, and installed the bind plug. I set the DX7 as ACRO, and used basic settings, using the server reverse ON for the AIL, ELEV and RUDDR as specified in the manual (same as JR).

GPS is assigned to the GEAR switch. I couldn’t assign the 3 position switch (normal / idle-up) on the transmitter as this seems related to the AUX2 (only available on a 7CH receiver). I will do that later. Luckily, the unit came on at Normal mode.

Once bound, I followed the manual, disconnecting the battery from quad and putting the throttle on FULL on the transmitter. With the transmitter ON, I crossed my fingers and plugged in the battery to the quad. BEEP…. BEEP – BEEP… and it continued. The manual didn’t say anything about what to expect. I waited and waited as the beep continued. The mode light was blinking RED. While that was continued, I found on the internet that the throttle stick should be moved to the lowest position after the double beep (a single followed by a double beep). GREEN light.

I moved the throttle stick and motors engaged. Without the props, I moved the quad, and sensed that the motors did behave as they should as tilted from side to side, forward and back. Same expected behaviour as I moved the stick.

I disconnected everything and now ready for a first flight. I think…

Re: Gaui 500X with GU-INS Build

Placing the foam pads at the base of the GU-INS is easy, but important. The unit must be isolated from any vibration. It must be centered on the mounting plate. Easier to do with the plate removed especially since the supplied wires go underneath the plate. Well thought removable mounting plate. The wires are connected in the order mentioned, top to bottom. It’s not evident from the picture in the manual which wires goes on top, but since there are single wires on some connectors it’s ‘child’ play.

After mounting the GU-INS unit on the quad, I connected the ESC wires. I’m glad I marked them when I did. It would be hard to identify otherwise.

I found the servo on the roll axis had a too small deadband(digital servos) and it would go back and forth and start a shake. It needs to be replaced with a better digital servo or analog. I extended the servo signal leads to my gimble control and used a seperate bec for servo power. The mount is made of CF and weighs 249g's. It retails for over $300 but I'll let it go for $115, shipping included. The low price is because of the poor roll servo operation.
I guess I just bought myself a camera mount. I had been looking for something similar. Thanks

Re: Gaui 500X with GU-INS Build

Finally, this is what it looks like without the GU-INS installed. That is my next challenge. Compared with the Gaui 330X, there is quite a difference. Can’t wait to fly it (Not today. Max is -11C).

Re: Gaui 500X with GU-INS Build

Time to install the blades on the prop holders. The even and odd motor mounts (numbered previously) use different blades.

Re: Gaui 500X with GU-INS Build

The power cables from the ESCs must come out of the side, and the GU-INS manual specifies that the individual pairs must be twisted at least 4 times to avoid electrical interference. Unfortunately, that’s not indicated in the 500X manual, so I had to take the 4:1 connectors apart a few times. I also made my battery connector which doesn’t come with the kit.
