Very nice Pup, Mike! That looks great in the air, especially with that eye catching colour scheme. It sure has class and "presence". I see you're a Jungmeister lover, too. Here's mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1NaeEPJ_qE

Hi Guy - thanks. Yes, the negative will help. That Jungmeister in my avatar is 1/4 scale, and was excellent with 2 degrees negative on the top wing.
Great plane to fly. I have a 1/3 one very high on my build list. They are just way too much fun to fly.

Negative Incidence

Hello MikeS;
Your new acquisition looks real neat. The engine is the right size. I like
your photo of your Buckerjungmeister. I scratched built mine from 3-scale views
to a scale of 1/3. I put -3 degrees incidence on the top wing (being aerobatic)
and very stable while inverted. The airfoil a RITZ design. Most of the wood
is white pine (have my own workshop) Dope and polyster.
You should have less ballooning effect with your -neg. incidence.
My Bjmeister is almost 20 years old now and still fly, but the glue joints I am
not so sure. I am gentle with it. I just like to do touch and gos and
long inverted flights and long loops. It flies 3 or 4 times a year now.
Enjoy...Guy

Awsum Mike......that colour scheme is simply brillant in the air. When Terry and I would take it out to fly on various sod farms numerous people would pull over and stop thinking it was a real plane in trouble. LOL
I'm glad it all worked out for you

Re: 1/3 Sopwith Pup followup

Thanks Trevor - yes, it's a Balsa USA - though I get, delving inside, the impression that it was originally plans built rather than kit built. I'd love to get some more background or history on this plane. I believe at one time it was owned & flown by Terry Olds?, and had originated from somewhere in New York state? Anyone got any more background?

The colour scheme is that of Capt. Foote at the Gosport School of Special Flying in 1917.

Cheers, Mike

1/3 Sopwith Pup followup

williame3590 suggested that I post something about the Pup I got from RCC, so here goes -

This Pup was listed in the classifieds last September, and I managed to ignore it for a week. However, when it was still there the following week, I started wavering, and finally made that fateful, 'well, let me at least just go and have a look..' decision. Enough said, I came home with a really full Minivan.

So I bought it - something I really don't usually do - I'm normally a scale scratch builder, but when I saw it I just couldn't resist!

I then, when time permitted, spent the balance of winter going through it completely with a fine-toothed comb. Although pretty pristine, it's still after all, a multi-ownered 7 year or so old Pup.

Anyway, re-rigged it completely, new turnbuckles, HD wires and all that, replaced the fuel system, a rudder servo, re-installed all the electronics, added a remote kill switch etc., and generally sorted out all the various indignities that a 7 year old Pup has suffered.

And finally last week, it was time to fly.
The Zenoah G62 (spring starter) fired up almost instantly, the Pup's cross-wind ground handling with the fixed skid is challenging, but it levitates off the ground in a few feet. That truely is the only way to describe it!
It's really majestic. And I can't get over how slowly everything happens. What a pleasure. 3 Point touchdowns are very achievable.

Wind was absolutely no problem, except it really doesn't enjoy a cross at ground level. This one is a heavy sucker though - 40lbs - but I calculated that it translates into a loading of around 21oz so nothing to even think about. The G62 with a 24x8 Metz prop drags it around at around 1/3 throttle happily - only needing more for those egg shaped loops!

I will still at some point need to re-rig the incidence of the top wing. It came to me 0/0, but it could benefit from the top wing being negative 1 - straight & level flight currently needs some down elevator. But meanwhile 'chocks away'!!

Cheers,
Mike

ps excuse the non-scale pilot - just couldn't keep the guy out of there...
