Cracked Canopy - an update of possible Interest

Curiosity got the better of me and I took the 500 and had it examined by a senior mechanical engineer at a large national engineering firm.
His quick assessment of the cracking problem is in two parts - one surprised me;

1) Spreading the canopy to get it over the posts, with so little flexibility in the gel coat surface is an obvious issue - no surprise there.

2) The post should be perpendicular to the surface into which they are placed if both the receiving hole and the post are round. If they are contacting at something other than 90 degrees then their shape needs to change or the angle of the receiver (canopy), or the post, needs to be altered. In this case an attempt to alter the angle of the receiver is being made using the grommet. This works in the rearward holes of the canopy as the angles are not that high. In the forward holes the angle is higher which is generating stress on the captured component (canopy).

He suggested trying a grommet with a round profile (ball shaped) in an effort to relieve the stress or better still change the angle of the front post - not so easy.

For what it’s worth.

Cheers

Yup. Dialling the Elev pot fix the bobbing. It was there when I started with 100% flat TC. Crazy headspeed! My flight time was just below 4:30 with the 3000mah. Now, I am running at 88% flat and still no bobbing.

hey Joel
Interesting
Did this fix the bobbing, and why wouldn't you attribute that to head speed?

A couple of good ways to check the gyro gain on the bench is to vary the gain in the radio and twist the unit or helicopter then note the servo response. If the servo response does not change with radio adjustments as expected then you need to look further before flying the machine.

Hey Stephen
2 am , can't sleep, and read this thread from start to finish - they are a bit of a build journal for me and useful from a forensic perspective. I find it helpful to reread others comments from a fresh vantage point. Yours made excellent sense and is a really good should-have-checked-that observation. In retrospect I think the selection of an intermediate setting for the 3GX unit left me with a sense of the model becoming some how more intelligent and taking care of itself.
Interesting - not sure what I learned from that other than to reinforce the check everything and then slow down a check it again mantra.
Thanks again
Jeremy

Re: Trex 500EFL Pro Build (flybarless)

Jeremy. I checked my 3GX parameter settings and this are the only things I changed with the normal pre-sets:

IN Ail and Elev parameters...all same settings except the Expo Level Setting which from 1, I changed to 0 since I am using expo from my futaba radio.

IN Rudder parameters...
Rudder Control Rate from 60 to 70
Rudder Total Gain Adj. from 70 to 55
Rudder Lock Gain Adj. from 70 to 58
Rudder Stop Gain Adj. is still 70
Piroutte Compensate is still 50
Rudder Speed-Up Adj. from 0 to 10
Anti-Tourque Comp. is still 0

IN Other Parameters:
Hiller Mix Rate...from 50 to 70
Bell Mix Rate...from 70 to 50
Swashplate Norm. Speed...from 60 to 65
Cyclic Pitch Comp is the same - 50
Piroutte Opt. Adj. is still the same - 50

IN the 3GX unit itself. I have the Elevator dial down a few notches to the left since I am getting some slight bobbing.

Re: Trex 500EFL Pro Build (flybarless)

I am at work right now. I'll post my 3GX parameters tomorrow. But it is pretty much in the normal setting with some customs changes.

I have my head set-up for +/-11 pitch and for cyclic: 8 degrees.

Gyro gain is 39 (Futaba). I got a bit of mild wag from the very start without chaging some settings before in the 3GX Rudder Parameter. So I have to dial it down to 28 before.

My set-up is mostly for basic flying.

Hey
How have you set it up?
I am curious what your head settings are for elevator/aileron blade pitch and your gyro gains?
Cheers
