Re: I just don't get it!

Being one of the "younger" guys in the hobby (38 years old with 5 years flying) I love 3D flying. Even watching it. In fact I have downloaded all kinds of 3D flying videos that I watch and rewatch many times over. I may only be an intermediate pilot that can do a small section of moves, but as was said previously, one can fly in circles and figure 8s only so much before you really want to do something else. Like a big loop, or a low inverted hover, or poor attempts at tic-tocs............ As much as I appreciate the scale pilots, it takes great skill to make an RC heli fly properly scale, I get bored watching it. Give me more 3D!!!

I do think I need to expand my skill level and I think different flying styles on the sim may be the key. I can see why watching 3D may show one new tricks.

As with Phil, I started flying helis 28 years ago for the CHALLENGE. 3D is demanding. Like golf, you never can master all aspects of 3D nor can you be the best.

Re: I just don't get it!

Pretty much like what rotormonkey and others have said here.

Even at a young age of 61, I still like to try new 3D maneuvers and to learn to do them well. I know that at my age, my eyes and hand/eye coordination will never allow me to do them at ground level + a few inches, like the younger fellas do. It also means it now takes me longer to learn any of these maneuvers compared to when I was younger, but that does not mean I cannot enjoy the adrenalin rush from performing them higher or the joy of coming home after finally getting some maneuver to look like I want it to.

I enjoy all styles of heli flying, from scale, to precision FAI type, to 3D. What 3D offers is a more leisurely approach to just letting my "heli hair" down, so to speak.

That said, if one looks at a heli design, that can take hard 3D and come back for more, flight after flight, will be a design that, when set for more mild type of flying, will usually have components that will be very hard to wear out or break.

Simple its the adrenalin that you get from putting your $1000 heli through maneuvers that are on the edge, without lawn darting it into the ground.

Re: I just don't get it!

To do it well you need good eyesight, depth perception and reflexes. Unfortunaley as you get older all 3 of these suffer. I always looked with envy at the perfect knife edge passes that one of our club members does. Absoutley flat and straight regardless of the wind that is blowing. Eventually I had to accept that at 70 your body just cant deliver what you see in your mind. Maybe if I had 40 years of experience I could do it, but for those of us that got back into the hobby after retirement the basic IMAC routine can be a challenge.

Re: I just don't get it!

While here this year I have watched a young man spend hours and hours of flying 3D. Setting up his airplane and going for more. I then watched him go through pattern flying. I couldn't help but believe that the 3D practice made his pattern work better. It seemed that he could put that airplane ( one of two he had) exactly where he wanted it smoothly and precisely even when the winds were at 90 degrees and fairly high. I have to tell you I envy anyone who can do this with a model. His engine never wavered and he was the one that helped others when they had any kind of difficulties with thier equipment or flying.

Re: I just don't get it!

And this is coming from someone who thought he'd just fly around smoothly. I thought that would be enough but it wasn't long before I just HAD to learn something new.

Re: I just don't get it!

Pretty much what Rotormonkey said. There isn't much 3D stuff I enjoy watching, but it sure is fun to try. It definitely raises the stakes and gets your heart rate going.

Although flying nice and smoothly has its own feeling of satisfaction, I can only do that for so long before I want to flip it or do the most gigantic loop possible. Haha.

And I think you're right when you say that maybe when you get a sim you may find it more fun. Because let's face it- you're never going to try a piro flip out of nowhere not knowing the stick movements to pull one off. Well, you could but it's a death sentence for your heli. Haha.

If you're into learning challenging new things I think you'll pick up a fun move or two to add to your bag of tricks. That's what I do. I'm not out to be AS jr. or anything, but it's definitely a satisfying feeling to pull off a move that I find scary.

Re: I just don't get it!

I don't especially love watching it either. Doing it on the other hand is just fun. After a while you get bored just doing forward flight, and the usual jazz, so you just keep trying new stuff. As you get comfy doing that new stuff, you try more stuff perpetually adding to the repetoir of tricks up your sleeve. It's just a way of pushing yourself to always keep learning something new. That's the attraction - for me at least.

I like watching smooth controlled 3d stuff. The stickbanging, I can take it or leave it.
