That hasn't changed much over the years! Thanks, I will pass that info to him.

As far as MAAC protecting our frequencies - don't even bother to bring that up. That stopped years ago.

The only "lobbying on our behalf" left on MAAC's plate that I can see is the current Transport Canada issue. The jury is out on that one and I sincerely wish them success, I see it as the most important issue we have ever faced!

MAAC to me is the entrance fee to surrounding club fun flies and a magazine that keeps me informed on what is happening across the country. It does need more articles though so send them in guys!

Our club is presently at an impasse, 2 for and 3 against MAAC sanctioning. It has been that way for several years now.

I just had a conversation with our most junior member who is moving away and was excited to tell me that there would be two clubs near by. I informed him that MAAC will likely be required to fly his foamy there. Hit him hard as he is of limited means. For some youth it's a one or the other issue!

Yep.....

$10.50 without magazine
$22.50 with magazine for Juniors

A lot of clubs even have free junior memberships.
Shouldn't cost the young guy much if anything

Your agent may have provided you with some different information stating you toys were not covered.

I contacted the Provider directly and specifically asked about my radio control model planes that fly for example 60 miles per hour, I have upwards of $50,000 worth, they use upwards of 14 or more volt batteries etc. etc., no exclusions are written in.

I'm not worried about trying to get any liability insurance for anything related to model planes out of my home insurance. MAAC is the best solution for that. Written in or not insurance companies have whole departments dedicated to saving them money. The only thing they lack is the title "The Pay Out As Little As Possible" Dept.
Hey I could care less what you do or what you believe. I’m not here to argue with you. I am simply relaying my personal experience with one insurance company. I too am a MAAC member I am not worried about liability coverage.

I do what makes me comfortable and I am simply relaying what I was told. In light of the wording the agent could not say for sure how it would be interpreted so he asked. The old insurance company would not issue in writing that my models were covered for fire, theft or vandalism. A different insurance company had a similar clause but after I explained I did not need liability coverage it didn't cost me anything to get it in writing from the new insurance company that I was covered for comprehensive. I have it on file that’s all I wanted. Nothing is left open to interpretation.

I’m not one to openly say what I have invested in my hobby (the wife might be watching ) it is what I consider enough to be concerned so I don’t rely on someone’s word or interpretation I require it in writing. It’s my proof if something goes south. If by chance your agent/contact person is wrong what proof of your understanding of your coverage do you have? Mine is in writing on the company letterhead.

Read this line carefully and note that all of our rc stuff will exceed 8 kilometers per hour and most are over 12 volts. According to the definition they are considered motorized vehicles or aircraft. This policy declares they are not covered liability or comprehensive. If your extra personal liability coverage like mine is attached to your homeowners policy I am not sure if this line would exclude that as well.

Re: your "Pro's or Con's" regarding MAAC

The first thing I was asked by the new insurance company was if any of them were Drones. I asked what they considered a drone and it was anything with a camera attached.

They might not know what they are talking about but they know we’re out there. Once they figure it out or have a few claims I can guarantee some changes will occur.

Anyone know if the insurance company MAAC uses offers home owners policies geared towards modelers?

If you are talking to an agent I doubt is they are familiar with the details of your specific policy. Its up to you to read it yourself. I posted this on another forum when it happened to me.

My home owners insurance came up for renewal so when I received the policy I read it over. Under exclusions they specificly mention model airplanes. Looking up last years policy this is new as is the wording for the whole section under exclusions.

Just a heads up for those whose home insurance has come up for renewal. Read the actual policy where it spells out specifically what is excluded. I have had insurance with the same company for years and even had a claim involving my RC planes that were in the van at the time. I never had a concern before but this year while I was looking through the exclusions I found new wording that excluded motorized conveyances that traveled in excess of 8 km per hour, such as lawnmowers, ebikes, kids riding toys, also included were hobbies and toys that exceeded 8 km per hour and it mentioned model aircraft specifically. I contacted my agent and we are working on getting my models included for loss only. I have had to write a letter stating I was only interested in coverage for loss such as fire and theft and I had specific liability coverage when I was using them. They also wanted to know if I expected coverage for loss of the model in the event of an incident while I was flying it. The answer of course was no but yes if I was transporting my models to and from the field inside my vehicle or trailer. I provided a copy of the MAAC insurance certificate from the MAAC web site and a photocopy of my yearly membership showing I am a member in good standing.
They also wanted to know if I made money with my hobby and if I was paid or would win prize money in any of the events/contests I have or will attend.
Apparently they have become very concerned with the liability of anything that can travel in access of 8 kms per hour if it’s not covered under a specific policy. Ebikes were mentioned as an example.
To those flying outside the AMA/MAAC umbrella and if you are depending on your house policy for your insurance you might want to check the new policy to see if the hobby has been excluded. For those members within AMA/MAAC it’s a general exclusion so at this time as my agent interprets it my stuff would not be covered in case of loss from fire or theft. It does not mention anything about modeling support equipment like chargers, radios, batteries etc. just model airplanes so the support equipment would be covered as it’s not specifically excluded.
Like I said this is the first time I noticed this it might be only the odd insurance company. Keep an eye on yours for changes. Be proactive don’t wait until you need it to find out you do not have coverage.

Re: your "Pro's or Con's" regarding MAAC

While on the insurance note I just purchased a new trailer for my hobby. Liability wise its covered while attached to the vehicle. It’s not covered however for loss due to comprehensive/collision or theft and the contents may or may not be covered under your house policy. It cost an additional $68 per year for collision on the trailer. Now it’s covered for all perils and the contents are covered. I could pick a smaller deductible for the trailer than the car so the trailer has a $250 deductible as do the contents.

With insurance assuming you have coverage is foolish make sure and ask for it in writing.
