KK2 is gyros and accels but you can disable self leveling.

Re: Best ARF in the 500ish size?

The KK2 does have an accelerator. I have one now and I bought it mainly because of the screen. Dragging a laptop off to the field (and the generator to power it) is a pain and I have a path worn in my steps and path to my desktop computer at home from all the adjustments for MultiWii.

I do like the fine adjustment possible with MWC (Multiwii) and it flies great. Very stable and the stick scaling lets you dial back the gain proportionally to stick input (like expo for gain). The KK2 also supports stick scaling - this could be very useful to someone wanting stable hovers but also capable of agressive aerobatics.

6cuda6 - all the flight controllers seem to support switched flight modes.

What I've found with my FC (FreeFlight STM32-based FC) running MWC (baseflight) is that the acro mode is super, super stable and while at the same time supporting aerobatics. This is not without significant tuning effort though (fairly steep learning curve). Even the KK requires some understanding of tuning parameters to optimize performance.

The new KK2 board looks like it's much easier to setup (has LCD screen/buttons to do it without a computer), and is Gyro only. A lot of people are saying good things about it. For less than $30 that'd likely be my pick now for an acro multi. That said I'd probably still look at all the new multiwii's on the market too.

So then the if i'm reading all this correctly: pick a frame design i like, get some motors to match the frame design, ESC's and a gyro board..this gives me the basics i need.....if i want to increase the stability i could purchase and intigrate a second board that i could have a radio switch assigned..... that will allow 2 destinct flight characteristics?

The best board for aerobatics is a gyro-only board. It will handle most like your helis. It is also the cheapest board. The issue with the cheaper options is that you need to do a lot of work to set them up.

The expensive flight controllers are optimized for aerial photography and so aerobatics aren't their thing. They are for big, hexas and octas that can cost tens of thousands and they hang extremely expensive $50K cameras on $10K gimbals.

ALL of the boards do stability well. Some of them just do it easier than others. The board that cost more have most sensiors and are optimized for stability and autonomous control, not aerobatics.

What want will be cheap and require you to do work to get the performance you want. No shortcuts for you (unless you pay someone to build it for you).

The more expensive it is, the less it's going to perform liek the helis you're used to. Even at that, the best you're goingn to do is flips and funnels.

Re: Best ARF in the 500ish size?

See i'm learning already...it's not about the machine, frame etc.....it's about what control factor you decide to invest in.

Perhaps the masses look at this differently than I; you all look for stability were as i'm looking for agility to go with the stability [secondary]?

So if i was to refrase the question:

What is the best board i could purchase for the giving flying condition i am after; stability with enough agility to do earobatics?

NAZA is a great board but the manual mode is not the best if your looking to do agressive arobatics as it has limiting tuning ability to really dial it in and make it more agressive.

This question is so general, I dont even know how to answer it.

Its too ambiguous to give an accurate answer.

"ARF Multicopter"?? is there such a thing?

The Goodluckbuy X252 is a great quadcopter. At $125 its the best "bang for the buck" IMHO

But, it comes with a KK board.. IT does the job but its pretty basic.

After the GLB X525, price goes up, but not necessarily the features or performance. You have to shop around to know what you are getting.
Good quality boards = good performance, but that comes at a cost.

Monday I flew a friends X525 that he put a DJI Naza FC in it.. OMG was I green with envy. That board was SWEEETTTT!!!! So precise, so smooth.
Altitude hold feature at 1/2 stick was NICE!!! Low voltage stable descent was also a nice feature. I must get one...LOL

No effort = no performance. It's all in the build and tuning. You need to learn how to do it through experience.

One decent option could be a whitespy quad. Google it as well and do some research. There are a couple of videos on the product page that you can take a look at as well. It's based on the Hoverthings HT-450 frame.

The DJI F450 FlameWheel kits are decent for the price in the 450 size.

There aren't a lot of quad ARFs available, most are typically just frame kits and other components added on seperately, unless you go with some of the Chinese ARFs.
