Re: Real Lancaster Bomber damaged in flight today.

If you read the above link I posted you would see this.

Museum chief executive officer Dave Rohrer said the Transportation Safety Board has given them permission to do their own inspection and CWH engineers have removed the wing tip just past the aileron.

Sounds like no reason to panic if the TSB does not even find it worrisome enough to send their own inspector.

Also see this,

He wants the Lancaster repaired and back in the sky by the time the Hamilton Air Show rolls around on Father’s Day weekend in June.

Bodes well for all of us that would like to see her in the air again.

Low level pass for the big crowd gathered at Winnipeg airport to see it arrive. The flight crew did not disappoint!!!!!

Sadly, but surely, they are way beyond their "best before" date. It would be nice to see one fly, but, in the event that one crashed while peforming a demonstration, would be a horrific way to remember the last two that could fly.

I imagine Transport Canada is all over the tip failure, and air worthyness is likely in question. Kind of like asking a 15 year old mare to run in the Kentucky Derby. It can be done, but she likely would never win. It may be time to ground 'em so generations to come can see a part of history.

Thanks for posting the picture of the wingtip damage.

I dont think this lanc was ever in any danger. Don forget, guys, in WWII these lanc's made it home shot to pieces with holes blown out and chunks of fueselage, wings and tail shot away. As the Black Knight would say in MP Life of Brian :" just a flesh wound"

as was stated, these planes were built at a fantastic speed, to get them on to the front lines as fast as possibal, and were never expected to last more than a few years at most. here we are 60 odd years on still operating this flying museum, and the fact that there are only 2 airworthy examples on the planet mean that there is not alot of data to referance on what might fail over time. You can bet the lads in Manchester are having a good hard look at the wing tips on the other 'lank

Looks to me like something is missing like a spar or wing tube. Can't imagine the rivets were supposed to hold the whole wing tip on with out some kind of help. At least the joint should not be at the same spot top and bottom.

I guess most of us are not really qualified to make any diagnosis but it looks like just plain old metal fatigue to me. Stress on the tips and all the vibration in the wings over all these years has to result in something giving.

I guess when these beautiful aircraft were built they never figured them to be flying even after 5yrs. and most of them didn't.

I sure hope they get it all sorted out but it really looks like a tough one to me.
As much as we all love to see this bird in the air it would be better to have it in one piece. The Lanc would still draw quite a crowd if it remained on the ground.
Personally, I want to see Lancaster fly for many years to come!!!

Re: Real Lancaster Bomber damaged in flight today.

I'm very happy to hear that it didn't turn into a crash. Based on info given to me through contacts at one of my photography forums that plane was based in Greenwood while my father was stationed there, so he must have both flown in it & worked on it more than once. I have very fond memories of that era & seeing them daily.

Re: Real Lancaster Bomber damaged in flight today.

Saw this baby being worked on last fall in the main hangar with everything open...very impressive! The tip folding must have stopped a few hearts in the air but she'll be back I'm sure. Corrosion is not an issue with these museum pieces as they are gone over with a fine tooth comb and parts are replaced as needed. Probably someone forgot some bolts as suggested
