Re: EVOLUTION

Depending on design and manufacture some engines were difficult till broken in. Those same factors could determine how long it took to achieve. One make that took extra effort were Fox as their hardened sleeves meant quite a bit of running time before finally working together. On the other hand, that same process meant they were virtually indestructible. I could count on the sleeve lasting till at least the 3rd ring.

I often looked for the Fox engines specifically at swap meets as they were invariably for sale long before they were through break in. It seemed a lot of owners thought they would be up and running like any other sport engine and simply did not invest the time to get them running right. They did go through some different carb designs and the last version was the best, but pretty well all could be strong performers.

Having said that, Fox was also known for low or no-nitro fuel, (FAI) and required some head button mods to run on higher concentrations. With their design that was relatively easy and I have made or modded quite a few, (including different versions for test to see which worked best).

Anyway, wonder if your problems were due to not fully broken in. Another caveat mentioned earlier was that 3-bladed prop they offered with the engines definitely caused issues as it would never let the engine wind up to the power band.

Re: EVOLUTION

I use 10% Coolpower if my LHS has it, otherwise 10% Omega.
I'd try 5% if I could find any.

I had lots of deadsticks with the Evolution.
I tried quite a few glow plugs in it, mostly O.S. #8 but some had idle bars.
The O.S. #6 was the only plug that really made a difference. The engine barely warmed up before that.
This was on a bench jig, I haven't flown that engine since I got a really stable O.S. .46.

As well, I don't have much glow experience so I'm making assumptions which may not be valid.

Re: EVOLUTION

I have to be honest and include the only problem with this engine that reading the posts jogged out of my memory. Admittedly it has been a few years since ran these as the fleet is mostly 4-stroke now.

The blue tinted drive washer was rather flexible. I found if a metal spinner backplate was installed, tightening the spinner itself tended to deflect it and stress the front bearing and cause early failure.

Mike, all my 2-smokers, EVO's included, ran down till freezing with the standard #8. Below that the #3 was required to keep the fires lit. Inverted was a different story, as the "F" plug was the only way to prevent low speed load up. Heard idle bar plugs would work just as well. Never had one to try.

The entire fleet runs 15% so no high stress. What were you feeding yours?

Re: EVOLUTION

I have one of those engines and had nothing but trouble until I put a hotter glow plug in.
O.S. #6 A3 brought it back to life.

I also knocked off the flywheel.

Hey it worked!

Thanks!

Re: EVOLUTION

I removed the tiny roll pin from the high speed needle valve. I'll have to give the low speed a close inspection.

Re: EVOLUTION

If I remember there is a small metric set screw accessed from the outside of the ring.
